Sorry it's taken so long to get this up but as you guys know, I have about 3/4 other stories and I have been very busy with life in general.😂
I got about a third of the way through this chapter then I sort of realised something. I feel that Pete was more in love with the idea of Maureen being a mother to his kids than he was actually in love with her. In the movie I feel that we only see him showing any kind of love towards his kids and....Ricki. Then when Maureen returns and we have that sort of Maureen/Ricki scene, Maureen is more concerned about the kids than her husband, she also doesn't even seem fazed that her husband was also doing drugs/that they belonged to him. In fact, she didn't even seem fazed when Ricki told her that Pete was still in love with her.
Don't know if you guys agree or not but I just thought that I would sort of share what I think.
Please let me know what you think/if you agree in the comments below 📥
~"I've taken time out of my day to sit here and try to think of things from your point of view, but I just can't seem to get my head that far up my ass"
Ricki lay back in the small bathtub, bubbles up to her neck. Pete sat on the ground with his back to her. Just as well....he couldn't see the looks he was getting.
"I see your sarcasm traits have grown with age" Pete muttered.
"I think we've already established that I am, in fact, younger than you" Ricki sighed with a roll of her eyes. It was nearly eleven, she didn't have time for this pointless crap.
"Well I see that you've also downgraded house wise" Ricki rolled her eyes when Pete brought it up, she knew he just couldn't resist.
"While you've upgraded" Ricki stated with a sarcastic chuckle "we all know, Pete. Your doing great while I'm a checkout girl with a drummer boyfriend, a shitty apartment and a night job as a singer in a bar. Cut the crap, Pete. We've been going round in circles for the past hour. Why don't we stop pretending that we're friends and want to be having this conversation and actually get to the real problem. Why are you here, Pete?"
"I'm surprised you eyes haven't rolled out of your head" Pete dodged the question with a small smirk. He couldn't see Ricki but he could just imagine all the looks he was getting. He has known her for over thirty years and yet she still could be that overly sarcastic teenager with an attitude problem, he met backstage at a concert....he fell in love with.
With a smile spread across her face, Ricki hovered the white cloth over Pete's head, twisted it, then gasped when the water trickled down over him. Ricki pushed her lips together to lower her smile down to a small look of amusement, as soon as Pete shot round.
She laughed and pushed herself further under the water when, a dripping wet, Pete came into view.
"Now that I've got your attention" she bit her lip "why are you here?...in this town, in this state...in my apartment?"
"You didn't have to drench me to get my attention"
"Turn around" Ricki raised an eyebrow "I think you've examined me enough, don't you?"
Pete turned back around with a small smirk on his face.
"...what would Maureen say?" Ricki continued with a roll of her eyes at the mention of her 'replacement'.
"I don't know" Pete sighed "let me know, if you find her"
"What?" Ricki near jumped up from the bath, sounding, what is that?, interested?
A shiver made its way down Pete's spine when he felt the force of Ricki's hands on his shoulders forcing him to turn round again.
"Ran off with the gardener"
The obvious look of despair on Pete's face stopped the shock on Ricki's face turning into fits of laughter.
"With the gardener?" Ricki raised an eyebrow.
"With the gardener" Pete repeated.
"Jesus Christ" Ricki fell wide eyed, back against the bath."Please don't start crying" Ricki sighed after about five minutes of pure silence "...I'll have enough of that from the kids, I presume...though you always did act like one of them"
"Kick a man while he's down, why don't you"
"Sorry" Ricki shrugged her shoulders.
"You always were crewel, in order to keep the walls up around you"
"Don't act like you know me, Pete"
"I do though" Pete swirled around without Ricki's say so "I do" he repeated.
"If you really know me then you would've known that I would never have married you just so I could cook, clean and be your kept slave" Ricki refused to even look at him.
"Oh...I did" Pete almost chuckled "I just think I was in denial....I thought we would have plenty of time before it actually happened"
"And when we didn't?" Ricki raised an eyebrow.
"I found maureen"
Ricki immediately looked away, it felt like Pete was staring into her, trying to read what she was thinking....what she was feeling.
"I think I was more in love with the idea of Maureen being a mother to the children than I was with...her" Pete finally admitted.
Ricki knew it all along, of course she did.
"She seemed pretty protective over you" Ricki sighed.
She wasn't jealous, definitely not jealous.
"Protective over me....or the kids"
Ricki's shocked expression was one Pete had never seen before. How could she have been so blind? It was so dobvious, yet hidden. Maureen's concern was centred around the kids; she didn't even seem concerned that anyone, except Julie was doing drugs....she didn't even seemed fazed when Ricki told her that Pete was still in love with her, she laughed in fact. She knew. Pete knew. Ricki knew, yet it still felt like it didn't need to be said.
Ricki never answered his question. He knew from the unusual look he got that she knew everything she needed to know.
"...and the kids"
"They don't know yet" Pete sighed "Maureen said she would tell them"
"..and she couldn't have kept this whole thing under wraps until Julie is more...I don't know...stable?" Ricki threw her hands in the air in frustration "she of all people knows what Julie has gone through...is going through!"
"I know...I know" Pete spun round again. He couldn't miss this.
"...and that gardener" Ricki began "I hope you told him to leave before you shoved a rake up his..."
"Ok" Pete stopped her.
Ricki's chest heavily rose and fell, she slid further under the water to cover the fact she was gasping for air.
Why was she getting so worked up about this? He's her ex-husband....ex.
She should be laughing, joking about his inability to keep a wife, downing a shot with Greg; but Greg isn't here....Pete is.
Ricki hastily moved her hand from the side of the bathtub when Pete's rested on top of it.
"You should be with the kids....our kids, but your not...your here...because of...."
"You"~
