~Chapter four,Imposter or not?~

How is this from Dad,but he’s already here?Maybe...he sent it earlier, but it just got here late?

“I wanna read it!” Carter said, reaching for the letter. I held it away from him.

“It might be a fake, Carter,” I said, glancing at the letter again. “Father’s already here. One of the villagers might have given this to Kevin to try and prank us.”

“But why would they want to do that?”

I thought for a moment. Why would anyone want to prank us? What’ve we done? All we do is stay in the castle all day. Dad makes all the laws with a little bit of help from Mom. Devin and I hardly even talk to anyone.

“Open it!” Carter whined.

“Alright, alright.”

I tore the envelope open and took out the letter.

“What does it say?”

“Hold your horses.”

I unfolded the letter and read quietly to Devin.

Dear family,

I am okay. I hope you are all fine. No one has caused you trouble, I hope?

The Gueciloians are rebelling against tax prices. The prince isn’t making anything better by calling them all dirty dogs and demanding they serve him, as if they are slaves. I’ve spoken to his parents and the butlers and maids, and they all say he’s been acting very strange since he came home from the ball. They are asking me to forget my role as a king and sneak into his quarters and poke around until I find something helpful. I probably won’t be home for at least a month seeing as the prince’s quarters are always occupied.

The rest of this letter is for Tamara only.

I looked at Devin.

“I’ll be reading it alone,” I said. He pouted.

“But I wanna know what he wrote!”

“He wrote ‘the rest of this letter is for Tamara only.’ I’m sure he wouldn’t want you knowing anything in the rest of the letter.”

“Okay, fine.”

“Close your eyes.”

After making sure his eyes were shut, I read on silently.

Tamara, I wish you were here with me. You are very persuasive, though I don’t think you realize it. I’m sure the prince would love your company.

Now, I’ve sent some guards to protect you, Devin and your mother. I’ve heard that someone dangerous could be coming to the castle. I want you to stay inside at all times, and, if needed, protect your mother and brother any way you can. I am giving you permission to abandon your princess duties when necessary, but do not let your mother or anyone else know. Make sure Devin is with you at all times. If you see anything strange, notify me and keep a close eye on the “problem”.

Tell your mother and your brother I love them.

Love,

Father.

Someone dangerous? What if it’s the guy mom’s with? Oh, what am I going to do? I’ve never been told not to act like a princess, and no one’s taught me how to defend myself. This is why princesses always get kidnapped!
