~Elizabeth~Tic. Toc. Tic. Toc. The clock on the wall ticks away and I have the sudden and uncontrollable urge to go and smash it on the polished floors. I read over my lines as a sudden wave of nervousness washes over me. Tic. Toc. Tic. Toc. The other eight young women in the room do the same but I can feel the confidence rushing out of every single one of their nonexistent pores. I do my best to try and not glare at each of them for looking so damn perfect. Tic. Toc. Tic. Toc.
"Next please," comes a voice through the door. I stand up and try not to trip as I walk to the room beside us. I take a deep breath, I can do this.
"Hello, my name is Elizabeth Burrows. It is very nice to meet you." I extend my hand for the casting director to shake and he does it gladly while looking me up and down.
"Welcome Elizabeth. How are you?"
I smile, "I am doing great sir, thanks for asking." The balding man sitting behind the table writes something down on a notebook and looks at me again.
"I assume you are here to audition."
"Yes I am." I bounce on my toes not really knowing what else to say. Usually, my agent gives me a lot more information about the part I might be playing but this time Angie only game me a short script and told me to arrive on time.
"I'm also assuming you don't know what you are auditioning for." The director chuckles and I nod my head bashfully wondering whether he could read my mind. "That's no problem, none of those other girls in the waiting room know either, so don't feel left out." I smile and try to picture the eight other girls in the room next door. They were all so intimidatingly gorgeous - it was hard not to feel a least a little left out.
The director smiles at me. "You can start reading your lines whenever you're ready." I nod and fold the paper in my hands, as if to prove to him that I have the entire monologue memorized.
"I honestly can't believe, that after everything that happened, he still chose me..." I try to get in to character as the words roll of my tongue. I act like the deeply in love girl I am supposed to be, head over heels for this guy who was no doubt an ass to her. "...I don't deserve him. I never will..." I move around slightly and shake my head at the right moments while I signal with my hands. "...I was such an idiot for ever letting him go..." The director's eyes follow my every movement and scribbles on his notebook every couple of seconds. I swallow my nervousness as I finish the two minute monologue. "...I just know that it was just meant to be."
I am met with silence. The once nice-looking man in front of me appears quiet and judgmental as I look at him expectantly. "Thank you Elizabeth. I am going to ask you some questions now and then you'll be able to leave." He completely dismisses my acting and I swallow the tiny lump in my throat. "Do you live on your own?"
I nod, "Yes sir, I moved out of my parent's house a couple of months ago." I miss my parents who now live around a thirty minute drive away, but I am having a great time living with my roommate and getting more freedom than I ever did before.
"Any siblings?"
"I have a younger brother. He is currently in high school." I make a face at the image of my idiotic brother. I love Simon but he is a serious pain in the ass. At least I no longer have to share a bathroom with him.
"Your portfolio says you are only nineteen. Does this mean you're going to college or university anytime soon?" He adjusts his glasses and glances at me.
"No, I am planning to wait a year and see how my acting career turns out. Hopefully, all will go well, but if it doesn't, I might have to do something else." After six months in this business I have been in two commercials and was a couple of times a background actress, but that is all. Unfortunately, my career hasn't really taken off much.
"I see," he scans the papers. "This job might require you to do a bit of traveling. Are you alright with that?"
My eyes light up. I didn't think this gig would mean I'd get to go anywhere besides Los Angeles, my home city. "I have absolutely no problem with that."
"What is your taste in music? Any favorite bands?" I furrow my eyebrows at the odd question. That is not something that is normally asked at auditions.
"Umm, not really, I like anything. I usually listen to the songs that play on the radio. Or I enjoy music that is too uncommon for anyone else to know." He nods his head at my reply, writes something down and smiles.
"I believe I have everything I need. Thank you very much for coming and I hope that we will meet again." He dismisses me and with that I leave the room with a sense of nervousness and excitement caught in my throat.
"Hopefully we will."
