CHAPTER SIX
Dining with the enemyThe warm summer breeze catches my hair as I stand on the terrace, looking out over the thousands of acres of neatly trimmed land. How long have I been standing here? I don't know, I lost count maybe an hour ago. I trace the scrapes on my left arm with my fingertips, remembering the day I got them. It feels like weeks ago.
How did it come to this? All I wanted was to come here and surprise my best friend. Instead, I end up at one of the Caliostro-cartel's safe houses, not sure what's going to happen to me. Not to mention the heir of the cartel went down on me just a few hours ago. And of course, now I'm restricted to my room. Ok, his room.
I take a deep breath, feeling my stomach growl. I wonder if I'm going to get any food? A small and pathetic part of me hopes that Nico told someone to send me some food later on as soon as he left. But no, probably not.
Thump, thump, thump
I snap my head towards the door, feeling a twinkle of hope as I move with long strides. As I open the door, the same guy from earlier today stands there with something black and chiffon-like in his hands.
"The boss requires you for dinner" He grunts, handing me the piece of fabric he's holding, "He wants you to wear this"
Warily, I grab it, feeling nervous about Giancarlo's motives. What if he knows about what happened just after we left him earlier today?
"He says he wants you on your best behavior. Yes?" The man says impatiently. Something tells me he's not too happy about running these little errands.
"Fine, thanks, Fabio" I say sweetly
"My name is not Fa-" I close the door before he even finishes the sentence, then turn on my heel and walk into the room. I hold up the fabric in front of me, seeing it's a beautiful maxi dress with a thin, swarovski clad neck strap. How much did this thing cost?
Still having doubts about what's going on, I undress and go into the bathroom, trying to touch up my face without any make up. There's a glow that hasn't been there in a long while, all thanks to Nico and his voodoo tricks. I comb through my hair with my fingers, then finish up by pinching my cheeks. I'm guessing I have to look semi-respectable, judging by the outfit.
I walk back into the room, picking up the dress from the bed and sliding it on. It's a little tight in the chest area, but will definitely do.
Nervously, I head out the door. As I walk through the corridor, the nervousness lies like a cold lump in my stomach. Why am I required for dinner? Is Nico going to be there? How am I going to act? As I start walking down the stairs, I hear a few men laughing. I lean over the railing, noticing Giancarlo, Nico's brothers Lorenzo and Rafael and another man standing there, drinks in their hands. And then I see him. He's standing next to a incredibly beautiful brunette, arm snaked around her narrow waist. He leans in and whispers something in hear ear, making her laugh delicately. A sting of jealousy hits my gut, making me have to fight the urge to vomit. What the fück is going on?
"Jade, there you are!" I hear Giancarlo exclaim
"Here I am" I laugh nervously, reaching the main floor. He walks over to me, giving me a look I can't quite comprehend.
