The Road So Far

"Have you not learned anything from the last time we split up?" Dean snapped at me, gesturing towards his fangs. I winced. "Exactly. It wasn't a good idea then and it isn't a good idea now. We stay together, Sam."

"Please, Dean...we don't have any other choice," I whispered and his green eyes softened before he nodded. "Thank you and hey, maybe you can look for Cas while I'm off with Bobby?" I suggested.

"Yeah...maybe."

___

"Look, we can explain all of this later, but you need to tell us what happened, Cas," Meg said gently, giving his shoulder a light squeeze and my eyes narrowed at the action.

Why the hell was she being so nice to him?

"I don't know all the details but...but I know why Alistar let me go," he said softly, sucking in a deep breath, "he...he says that he's ready to attack."

"You mean..." He nodded in confirmation as I trailed off.

"He's putting his plan into motion... and he been using me as a decoy," he whispered and my eyes widened. Shit. Shit, shit, shit!

___

"How would you like to be human again?" Death asked him and for a moment, Castiel's breathing stopped, his eyes wide in shock before he smiled ever so slightly.

"What do I have to do?" He asked him, staring up at Death with determined blue eyes.

___

"I told you that he was plotting, Samuel. And because of your stubborness now he's already put his plan into motion."

"But D-Dean," I started to argue but Death sighed, cutting me off.

"You're really gonna make me show you, aren't you?" And I frowned in confusion as Death snapped his fingers, conjuring a crystal ball into his hand and holding it out to me as an image appeared in the ball.

"No..." I whispered, watching with wide eyes as I saw Dean and Cas running through the streets, blood dripping down their chins. "No! This isn't true! You're lying!" I yelled at him and his eyes darkened.

"Does it feel like I'm lying?" He asked lowly. "Because tell me why else Dean wouldn't answer your calls, or why else he was soooo desperate to find Castiel, hmm?" My eyes watered. "He was using you, Sam, since day one. Lying to you, gaining your trust, doing what ever he could to side track you from stopping Alistar, and look...it worked, didn't it?" My bottom lip trembled, my eyes glancing back at the image of Cas and Dean. Death sighed. "This isn't the Dean you fell in love with, Sam. And I'm sorry, but it's the truth. This man...this thing, is a vampire, and he's currently heading right here right now to finish you off. So the question is...are you gonna stand here and let it happen? Or are you gonna fight back?" He paused. "Only you can decide your fate," Death said quietly then he snapped his fingers and vanished, the world unpausing as Bobby and Trevor started to move again.

And the pressure suddenly felt like too much, Bobby's yelling, Trevor's fangs nearly peeking out from under his lips, the image of Dean and Cas replaying over and over again, and before I could even stop and think about what I was about say, I just...blurted it all out.

"Dean's not dead, Bobby."

And suddenly, for once in a really long time, everything was quiet.

___

"Then why did you guys barge in here? What happened to sticking with the plan? Bobby wasn't supposed to know about you Dean. So why would you suddenly ignore that?" Sam asked, his eyes hard again but the hesitation from earlier still gave me hope.

"Sam, Sammy, I swear. It's true. I..." my eyes darted between the two of them. "Look, we came over here right after because....because Alistar is starting his attack. Don't you feel it? The change in the air? Cas told me right after I found him and we wanted to warn you guys," I took another step forward, this time towards Sam.

Bobby just silently watched me.

"Please, Sammy...we have bigger things to worry about. I-" My voice cut off when I saw a dark shadow appear behind Sam and Bobby. It was nearly seven feet tall and I knew by the black robe that this was the famous "Death" that everyone had been talking about.

'I can't have you ruin things any further. You should've just left.' His voice rang in my mind and I barely had the chance to open my mouth when suddenly his hands shot out towards me, and my eyes widened, my stomach clenching as a sudden hunger over took me. And I hissed in pain, my arms wrapping around my stomach and groaning.

"Dean?" Sam's voice sounded miles away, and I wanted to call out to him, to point out the creature behind him and show him what he was doing to me, but suddenly I felt my fangs throb in my gums and my eyes flash red and I all I could focus on was the hunger. The pain in my stomach. The sudden need to feed.

The monster within me.

"Dean! No!" Castiel shouted as I zoomed forward, knocking out the gun from Bobby's hand as I slammed him against the wall, and I heard shouts in the background, pleading, but I couldn't stop. I couldn't fight. It was like I wasn't even in control of my body at all anymore, and just as I leaned forward to sink my fangs into his neck....

a gun went off.

And suddenly the hunger wasn't the only pain I was feeling.

"He was right..." I heard Sam whisper.

And then another shot went off.

___

"...you were right...I am a monster. I'm so sorry, Sammy," he croaked and just like that...

Dean was gone.

And he took my heart with him.
