"Sam, we have to keep going!" Bobby shouted, wincing as one of the vampires tore into a civilian's neck near us. And even though I knew he was right, I still couldn't stop myself from protecting the family that had been sitting next to us. I didn't care if the world was ending or not, it was still my job to protect people.

"I'm not going anywhere until we find them shelter!" I responded, cursing when another vampire tried to attack them. I ran forward and kicked the creature right in the knee, the monster howling in pain as his bone snapped back. I quickly drove my stake through his heart, killing it just in time to see another one coming from behind.

"I'm gonna regret this," Bobby huffed, twirling the stake in his hand before he took aim and threw it right into the vampire chest.

I smiled, relieved, and started looking for a way to hide them.

"See anything that'll help?"

"Kinda hard to when everyone's running around everywhere," Bobby answered, retrieving his stake from the ground. "I get you wanna help, but we really don't have time-"

I was about to warn him about the vampire coming up behind him, when an arrow came out of nowhere and struck the monster in the chest, it's body turning into ashes. "What the-" my voice cut off, scanning the roofs before I finally saw Castiel on top. He gave me a sheepish wave when he saw me staring.

"What's he doing here?" Bobby frowned and I sighed, knowing exactly what this meant.

If Cas was here then so was Dean.

"Bobby, take them to Castiel. He'll protect them."

"And leave you? Yeah, right."

"Bobby," I pleaded and the hunter stared at me for a few more seconds before he finally nodded.

"Fine....just don't get yourself killed, idjit."

"Wouldn't dream of it," I smiled and started my way through the crowd. Now that I knew Dean was here too, I couldn't afford to waste any more time. I had to get to Alistar before he did.

So I dodged, ran, and fought through the crowd of vampires and humans, trying to ignore the screams for help and the sound of blood spilling on the ground. It sucked, not being able to do the one thing I was trained to do, but it'd be even worse if I dont get to Alistar in time.

And I was almost to the center of it all when I saw him.

Dean.

And he looked awful. I could tell the blood was getting to him with how clenched his jaw was, the way his eyes refused to look down in the bath of blood he was lying in. But what surprised me more was the fact that he wasnt giving in. No, in fact, he seemed more determined than ever to kill the man standing in front of him.

Alistar.

I could feel my blood boil at the sight of him. All the pain and anger and hatred that I had felt coming back to me all at once. And even though I knew Dean wanted to be the one to end him, I knew that it had to be me. My visions showed it.

So I taunted the vampire, stake in hand, and my other hand reaching for the grenade I had tucked into my back pocket. Because I sure as hell wasn't going to let this man escape. And as I stepped closer and closer to him, a sense of calm washed over me.

I was going to make this right.

I was going to end months of pain. Months of not knowing what was coming next. I was finally, finally, going to end this.

...and that's when it happened.

One second, I was two feet away from Alistar, and the next, Dean was on him. The vampires wrestling on the ground before Dean ended up on top. "Sam, run!" He had shouted, voice morphed and distorted. And while my mind was screaming at me to obey, the other part of me- the stupid part of me- couldn't move. Because there's no way in hell that thing was Dean.

"Are you deaf? I said, run!" He growled, muscles straining from holding Alistar down. And when I still didn't listen, his head snapped up. "Unless you want to die too."

And I couldn't breath. I couldn't move. It was like my heart had stopped and I didn't know how to start it again. Because the eyes that looked up at me weren't those emerald green ones I was used to. No...they were pitch black.

"What'd you do..." I whispered in horror, and Dean barely had time to process my words when Alistar attacked.

"Shit!" He flew backwards as Alistar kneed him in the stomach, his back hitting the edge of the fountain with a sickening crack. And the other vampire wasted no time in jumping him.

"Dean!" I gasped, my feet finally moving. And I didn't know what I planned on doing. All I knew was that I wasn't going to let him die for me.

Not again.

"Stay...away..." Dean coughed, nails digging into Alistar's hands as the vampire wrapped his hands around his neck.

"You should listen to your boyfriend, Sam. I could kill you in an instant," Alistar growled, eyes flickering up to mine. "And I'd feel so bad about it, since little deany here just gave up his soul for you."

My heart stopped.

"No..."

He smirked. "Yeah, crazy isn't it? All of this... for a human." He scoffed, glancing back down at Dean. "Too bad it wasn't enough."

"Fuck...you..."

"Say hi to death for me," he hissed, and just as he started to lean down for the kill...

I took off the pin from the grenade.

"One more move, and we're all dying today," I threatened, both vampires freezing in front of me. And I could see the shock in their eyes. The way Alistar's flickered around wildly, trying to weigh out his options. And I felt a sick satisfaction in knowing that I had managed to scare him.

"Bold move," he finally muttered, glancing down at Dean. And I twitched, not liking the way he was looking at him. "But I think you're forgetting one thing."

I frowned, glancing between them.  "And what's that?"

He smiled, flashing his teeth at me. "I know you'd never kill Dean."

He shoved Dean towards me and I just barely managed to move out of the way, before I saw him running in the opposite direction. "He's getting away!"

"No, he's not." Dean growled, glancing briefly at me. "Throw it when the time is right." Then he flashed forward, jumping at an inhuman height before he managed to tackle down Alistar, their bodies colliding with a loud crack. "Trevor, I need a hand here!" He yelled, but Trevor was too busy fighting off the other vampires that wanted to attack him.

"I wish I could buddy!" He grunted, and I could see Dean struggling to hold him down. Alistar quickly starting to overpower him.

Told you you couldn't win, Death's voice rang in my mind. But with Michael-

I don't need Michael. I snapped in my mind, staring down at the grenade in my hand. I can make my own destiny.

Sam-

I glanced up. "Dean, throw him towards me!"

"What?"

"Just do it!" Before I back out, I added silently. And he hesitated, glancing back and forth between us before he realized he had no other choice. He didn't stand a chance by himself. He shoved the vampire towards me, his body coming closer and closer towards mine. And I knew that I only had a few seconds left before we'd make contact.

And as I waited, I got felt a strange feeling of acceptance wash over me. All these months of dreading, of worrying, of confusion and fear...it was all leading right up to this moment. I chose my own destiny. My own fate.

And I was actually pretty damn proud of it.

My eyes drifted over to Dean, realization dawning on his face as he saw the grenade still in my hand. And all I could do was hope that my Dean was still in there in my final moments.

I forgive you, I mouthed, just as Alistar crashed into me.

And the sound of the explosion was the sweetest noise I've ever heard.
