It was Friday, a day before the state championships for wrestling and coach had us practicing every move, perfecting every little detail until we got it right. Even the people that didn't make it to state were still going through the same hell as the ones that were.
We had 8 people going to state, that included Tyler, Jett, Seth, myself and a few other guys that I never really talked to. I think their names were Chase, Luke, Logan, and Evan.
I got the option to wrestle girls state or guys state, but I figured since I had been wrestling against guys all season I might as well just finish it out wrestling guys, besides it made me feel like I had accomplished something as a wrestler. Wrestling against guys was defiantly a lot more challenging than wrestling against girls.
After two hours of practicing, I was excited to finally be able to go home. I was exhausted, I had three major tests in school today that I had been studying all week for and then practice and they had both completely drained me. I was already imagining my comfy bed when coach came up to me. "Since you seem to be the only one that knows how to do moves correctly in this gym, you're staying after practice to work with Davis." I understood that coach was under a lot of stress with state being tomorrow and all, but he could've asked me instead of demanding me to practice with Tyler. Which I really didn't want to do.
Tyler and I never really talked about that night. Nor did we actually talk about anything, but every time I passed him in the hallways at school he'd smile at me. Something was defiantly different with him; he wasn't his same grumpy self.
"Now don't let him leave till he gets the damn move right!" Coach yelled more at Tyler than he did at me.
Coach started to walk away, "are you leaving?" I asked.
"Yes, I've got food to be eaten at home and I'm suffocating in this damn gym." With that coach left and then so did the rest of the guys until it was just Tyler, Seth and I.
"Do you want me to stay and make sure he doesn't give you shit?" Seth asked jabbing his thumb in Tyler's direction.
Laughing I just shook my head, "I'm pretty sure I can handle myself. Besides it shouldn't take to long."
"Alright, but you can call me if you have any issues!" Seth smiled at me.
"Thanks, Seth!"
We said our goodbyes and I made my way over to Tyler in the center of the gym.
"So what do you need help with?" I asked as I approached him.
"The...uhh, the uh firemen's carry." He sounded so embarrassed and looked so flustered, it was actually kinda cute.
"Hey, everyone has their own weaknesses, yours just happens to be the firemen's carry." It was a type of throw, it also just so happened to be one of the moves I was best at.
Tyler mumbled something under his breath, but I couldn't understand what he said.
"Ya, but you do them perfectly and I can't even get the damn motion right!" He finally spoke up.
"Tyler, like I said, everyone has their weaknesses. Let's just try the move a couple of times so I can see what your doing wrong."
He practiced the move a few times until he finally started to get the motion of it down, his main struggle was the placement of his legs on the mat. After a little more coaching from me and a couple of failed attempts he finally got the move right.
Now that he had the move down he just needed to practice it live.
We ran through it once and he struggled. "I hope you give out more pressure in a match then you are using right now!" I said.
