It was awhile before I gathered up the courage to talk to Michael again.

I would see him, sometimes just a glance through the windows, or sometimes by a faint light as he smoked in his backyard at night.

He noticed me too, and I knew it. Sometimes he would glance up and smile at me, or give a tiny wave. It was cute. But he never said anything either.

Until a night two weeks later.

I was sitting at the dinner table besides my parents. We were dinner together, as usual. As usual, it was boring. My parents made polite conversation as I boredly ate. I started thinking of excuses to get up.

After a few minutes of this, someone knocked on the door.

I didn't really pay a lot of attention as my mother went to answer the door, until she called my name.

"Luke? It's for you." She yells.

My heart jumps as I have a pretty good idea of who it is.

"Why don't you come in?" I hear my mother talking to Michael in the entry.A minute later, he's standing in my dining room.

He looked so out of place in the pristine room. Him, with his bright hair and dark skinny jeans.

He had a smile on his face, but his eyes were red.

"Do you want something to eat-" My mother hesitates.

"Michael. My name is Michael."

"Michael! Do you want something to eat, Michael?"

Michael shakes his head.

"I was just wondering if I could borrow Luke for a little bit? It won't be long, I promise."

My dad looks at my still full plate. My stomach jumped in anticipation.

"Just let him go." My mom gazes towards my dad.

"Of course." My dad finally says.

"Take all of the time you need." My mother adds, looking at Michael now.

I jumped up, throwing my plate away.

"Thank you guys." I tell them.

"Be good."

I tried to make eye contact with Michael. As if to ask if he was okay or something. But he avoided contact as I followed him outside.
