I could feel the wind rushing over over my face and through my hair. I had my eyes closed ever since he leaped off of the ground, gripping onto his oddly human arm which was around my torso. He had a firm grip on me, but it wasn't too firm. Like, to make sure I didn't fall, but also making sure not to crush me.
"Open your eyes," I heard him say softly into my ear.
I shook my head vigorously in protest. I have always been absolutely terrified of heights. If I open my eyes, I might freak out and make us crash. I certainly don't want that.
"Please? It is not that frightening. Flying is the one thing that brings me joy within this brutal life I live," The tone of his voice made me uneasy. Thinking of the life that Raven Mockers actually live is very sad. I slowly opened my left eye, peeking, ready to close it again. But, when I opened my eye, my right eye followed pursuit. The view was absolutely breath taking. I could see all of Tulsa.
"Hey! Look, there's my house!" I let go of Rephaim's arm with my one hand and pointed at it. Then, immediately regretting the decision, grasped his arm again, holding on for dear life. I heard him lightly scoff at me. "Hey, I'm scared of heights. Be happy I haven't flailed and kicked ya yet."
"I am simply amused with your actions. Nothing more. If you want me to put you down, say so and I'll do as desired," The way that Rephaim said this made it sound like I owned him and controlled him.
"Well, I don't own you. I'm just glad you haven't killed me yet," I immediately gasped at my own words and felt horrible. "I'm so sorry! I didn't mean it like that! I just. . . You know, your kind and my kind usually aren't the best of friends and. . .I. . ." He lightly placed his hand over my mouth to silence me.
"Hush, child. I know what you are trying to say. It is sadly true. Raven Mockers and Vampires have been mortal enemies ever since my father fell from Nyx's side as her warrior. It is also true that we, Raven Mockers, are very vicious, relentless, brutal and ruthless. But, we do follow some simple rules. Such as our situation. Even though you knew that I could kill you within a flick of my talon, you yet still attempted to heal me in my time of need. Therefor, in return, I shall repay the deed. It is an oath we take as we are brought into being," He removed his hand from my mouth.
I didn't know exactly how to reply to what he had said. So, I just relaxed and took in the scenery as we soared above Tulsa. In this moment, it was as if the world had stood still. I wasn't thinking about school, or the fact that I am a High Priestess of the Red Fledglings, or that when I get back I have been gone from my apartment with Zoey for a couple days and she's probably worried sick about me. I wasn't thinking at all, really. I was just. . . happy.
I noticed the ground was suddenly getting closer and closer. I squealed, flailed and started to freak out. "We're falling!" I screamed.
"That is the point," I heard Rephaim's wings move, and we began to fall even faster.
"No no no no no no," I began yelling. "Please, no! This is too scary!"
"Shh, hold on," Rephaim said a little too calmly.
We were falling at incredible speed and I felt his grip get tighter around me. I began to yell a bit as we were almost to the ground. This was like being on one of those roller coasters that shoot straight down and you felt like the ride was going to break at any second.
I covered my face with my hands and began to make a slight squealing sound. The only thing running through my mind was 'oh my Goddess, I'm going to die.' I was so freaked out that my life began flashing before my eyes. Starting at the memory from when I was six, in the kitchen with my mother, baking chocolate chip cookies. Which all ended up burnt but my daddy ate them anyway. Then my memory skipped to the moment of when I was 14 and went to my first high school dance, which totally sucked. I just sat in the corner, by myself, and nibbled on a cookie. Then my memory skipped to the day that I was marked as a vampire. It was the best thing that had ever happened to me. Once I joined my House Of Night I made the best of friends that I had ever had. Zoey, Damien, Erin, Shawnee, Jack, Stark, and even snotty, uptight Miss Priss Aphrodite. We all love each other and would die for each other. I am so glad that I was marked. Or else I wouldn't have made these friends. I wouldn't be the High Priestess of the Red Fledglings (Which is totally stressful). Also, having Zoey, leader of Dark Daughters, and also a High Priestess, my bff is a blessing from the Goddess herself.
My mental end-of-life scenario was quickly brought back to reality of falling at several hundred feet per second. I peeked through my fingers and saw the ground extremely close. I freaked out and yelled, "Rephaim! Stop! You're going to kill us!"
I felt Rephaim's hand over mine, as if trying to calm me. "Hush, child. We'll be fine. If I wanted to end your life I would have done it ages ago."
I didn't know if I should be offended or thankful. Because what he said was very true. He could have easily killed me before. . . Now that I'm thinking about it, why hasn't he?
I felt a very large impact. As if I were just in a car crash. I lost my breath and my side was in excruciating agony. I felt the grass tickling my face. I couldn't move. I began freaking out but my body wouldn't move an inch. I could see but I couldn't look around. I saw Rephaim rushing over to me, he leaned down and started talking to me, but I couldn't hear him nor could I move my mouth to reply. My vision started going blurry when I saw him hold up his forearm to his beak and make a large gash. He sat down beside me, lifted me into his lap, held my head and pressed his forearm to my mouth. I felt the warm blood run into my mouth. It had a foul taste, like it was rotten. It was nothing like human blood. Human blood has a warm, sweet taste, kind of like a sugary syrup. This. . . This was very sour and rotten like a bad egg. I began feeling extreme power rushing through my body. I felt my strength returning, I felt strong. Without thinking, in a flash, I was latched onto Rephaim's arm drinking his blood as if it was free beer. I sank my teeth in farther than I've ever sunk them into an animal.
"Go ahead, drink," I heard Rephaim say.
Once I was back to myself and realized what I was doing, I threw Rephaim's arm away from me and quickly scooted away from him. I wiped my mouth with my sleeve and looked at Rephaim sheepishly. I felt my cheeks burning red. I didn't know what to say.
Rephaim stood up, lifted his arm and licked where the gash was. As his tongue ran up his forearm, it was healed. He began walking towards me and said, "Don't say that."
"What? Say what? I didn't say anything. . ."
"I heard your thought. You just said you cannot believe you did that and now I probably think you're a monster for not stopping from drinking my blood." He said as he reached down to take my hand and help me up.
"But. . . How did you-" I took his hand and he lifted me easily off the ground to my feet. My thoughts were racing as I was trying to figure out how the hell he could read my thoughts. Then it hit me. "Did. . . Did you imprint me?"
His expression didn't change as he said, "Yes, I did."
I had no idea what to say. I thought an imprint could only happen between two vampires or between a vampire and a human. What does this even mean? Does this mean that Rephaim and I are forever linked until one of us breaks the link with another? I'm imprinted with a raven mocker. . . I am imprinted with a fricking raven mocker! I mean, I'm not complaining that it was with Rephaim. . . I don't really mind, actually.
Rephaim replied to my thought, it's weird how he can just hear my thoughts. "An imprint can also happen with a raven mocker but it works a bit different. Our blood is extremely powerful, it is much different than that of a human or vampire. When a raven mocker willingly offers it's blood and the other accepts it, it creates a bond between the two. Until one of the two break the bond by feeding their blood to another. Then the bond is broken. The bond allows the two to feel the emotions of the other, telepathically hear the thoughts of the other, and be able to feel a pull in the direction that the other is in. The bond also intensifies intercourse between the two."
My eyes went wide and I was stunned by the last sentence he spoke.
"I'm not implying anything by that. I am simply explaining to you as much as I can to help you understand what we now have." I swear I almost heard joy in his voice as he said this.
"Well. . ." I had no more words.
"It's okay, I'm not expecting you to say much. Honestly, I was expecting you to hit me or try to kill me." He said simply.
"Thank you. For saving my life." I said.
His wings rustled and he was silent for a bit, "You're welcome, Stevie-Ray."
