"You kind of suck at this game" Lisa's cheeks burned. She could feel Nine's critical gaze boring into her back.

"Come on Nine. Don't be mean, Lisa's trying her best".

Lisa sighed.  It was true, she was trying her best... but Nine was right. Her best sucked. Why did she even agree to this in the first place? But then, she knew why. It had been Twelve's idea.  She'd been watching them play video games, when Twelve looked over his shoulder at her. He had this mischievous grin on his face. Lisa had stared back at him, puzzled.  "wanna play?"He'd asked.

And of course, Lisa had said yes.  Like an idiot.

She really had no idea what she was doing. The directions they'd given her made no sense. The screen was blurry. They were too many buttons on the controller. What was the difference between X and A? Everything was exploding, and she had no idea what to do.

She could hear Twelve shouting advice at her from the sidelines (more specifically the other side of the couch), "Press X not Y! Jump! You can do it!" but it wasn't helping.

Bright red letters flashed across the screen.  GAME OVER. Lisa's eyes stung.  She was dead.  Twelve was wrong. She couldn't do it.

"I'm sorry Twelve, "She hated this. For once, just once, couldn't she actually be good at something? But it couldn't be helped. She messed up everything she touched. Why would this time be any different? "I'm just not cut out for this." She handed him the controller.

Twelve gave her a sympathetic smile. "Don't worry Lisa. Nobody's perfect on their first try."

She tried to return his smile, but she could feel her face twisting into a frown. She stared down at her hands. Maybe he was right, but anybody would do better than she could.

"Nine, let's play again", Twelve said.

He'd given up on her. She was a lost cause. They'd have way more fun without her. Lisa prepared herself to leave.

Suddenly, she felt the green upholstery shift beneath her. She looked up. Straight into Twelve's eyes.

He was right next her. Lisa's breath caught in her throat.  "Let's try it together, okay?"

"Umm..." her voice trailed off.

He placed the remote in Lisa's hands, and wrapped his fingers around her own, so they were both holding the controller. Together.  Lisa was a giant ball of nerves. He was practically hugging her.

He leaned a little closer; she could feel his breath brush against her ear. "It'll be fine. We're totally going to beat Nine".  Losing was the least of her worries.

"Okay Nine, let's do this. Me and Lisa vs. you".

Nine kept his eyes trained on the screen, but she could hear the competitive edge in his voice.

"Fine...don't expect me to go easy on you".

3...2...1

Twelve guided their hands around the controller.

"This isn't so bad, is it?"

Lisa took a deep breath, "I guess..."

She felt strangely calm. The feeling didn't last long. Nine was ruthless.  He hadn't been kidding when he said he wasn't going to go easy on them.

"Alright Lisa, it's time to step it up a notch. It's going to get a little harder, so stay with me, okay?"Twelve said, prepping her for battle.

She nodded."Okay".

She couldn't see his face but she knew he was grinning. She almost grinned herself.

"Okay".

"Die!Die!Die!" Twelve screeched as he slammed their hands into the buttons. Lisa couldn't help herself. She was laughing.

She'd forgotten what laughing felt like.

"This is serious Lisa! No time for laughter!" Twelve chided, but it sounded like he was laughing too.

It felt good.

"Lisa! Lisa, we won!" Twelve cheered squeezing her hands.

Nine shook his head. "Actually, you guys lost. "

Twelve glanced at Lisa. They wore twin smiles. Brighter than the sun.

"It's a different kind of prize".

It felt warm.
