"Look here, it's Melissa and Robyn." A short, brown-skinned girl with fat cornrows snorted loudly. Her face had harsh pigeon-like features, and she was contemptuously looking at Robyn with narrowed eyes.
"Leave us alone, Mita." Melissa mumbled under her breath. Her eyes were staring down at her shiny black shoes as more of Mita's cronies gathered around in a wide circle.
Robyn was standing still with a defiant scowl on her face, as Mita laughed maliciously.
"Leave you alone, eh? I'm sorry but I don't think so, I need Yellow Woman to give me her pretty hair." Mita had been referring to Robyn. All of the girls at their preparatory school teased Robyn constantly because of her abnormally pale complexion, and thus gave her that outrageous pet name. Many girls were also envious of her rusty brown hair, which fell just below her upper neck.
"Phuck you, Mita." Robyn savagely spat out.
"Oooh, Robyn's usin' big nasty words! I think she needs to be taught a lesson," Mita snarled as she edged closer towards Robyn.
Robyn stood with her feet splayed and her fists clenched. Just as Mita neared her, the wheezing groan of a bus engine became audible as it headed towards them.
"You lucky, Yellow Woman... Next time you won' be," Mita sneered as she stalked back over to her gang of friends.
Robyn breathed out a sigh of relief. For now she had avoided a fight with Mita.
The bus soon came to a thunderous stop, hacking and coughing up alot of smoke. The students all groaned as a thick screen of wispy white smoke trailed from the buses pipe.
There was already a clear line formed. Robyn and Melissa tried to get in line directly after three other students but Mita and her friends roughly shoved them out of the way towards the back of the line.
"Hey!" Robyn seethed angrily. This was beyond unfair, and she was beginning to get tired of Mita.
"Yellow Woman," Mita silently mouthed, then she cackled to her friends as they all boarded the bus from the front of the line.
It took a few extra minutes for the entire portion of the neighborhood to board, since there weren't as many seats as there were kids.
After all of the students had boarded the bus, they were driven out of their neighborhood and onto a main road.
Melissa and Robyn had chosen a seat together, and for once they weren't forced to allow a third person in with them.
The bus was quiet, and devoid of any misbehavior. All the students knew not to act out, it was punishable by a paddling.
"Robyn, next time I'll help you. I was scared," Melissa apologetically whispered.
Robyn gave her best friend a wan smile. "Don't worry bou' it. I was scared too," She admitted softly.
Melissa smiled then grabbed Robyn's hand into her own. She squeezed it, then turned her attention towards the window. Robyn looked down at their holding hands.
This is what friendship is. Robyn nodded to herself, then turned her head to look out the window as well.
"Ok, gals grab pencil and paper we will begin todays lesson shortly," Mrs. Harison called. She was Robyn and Melissa's favorite teacher, she was funny and made all of their learning interesting.
