Chapter 2
When Kaylee woke up, she felt as though she had just finished the best night’s sleep of her life. Reluctant to open her eyes, she listened. Voices, footsteps, computer keys. Why was someone in her house? Confused, she opened her eyes.
The room was the dark of a late afternoon. The windows on her left looked out into a large courtyard with lots of grass and a couple picnic tables. This was not her home.
Slowly, she turned her head. Wall at the foot of her bed had a door in the middle. The remainder of the wall had a glass window on the top half and a wall on the bottom half. Beyond the window was a normal wall with a door into the courtyard on the left side.
To her right were more half windows for the length of the room. Outside her room she could see people dressed in white walking around. She was right in front of a nurse’s station. As she watched, one of the nurses glanced at her room.
Realizing that Kaylee was watching her, the nurse put down the chart she was holding and hurried over to Kaylee’s door. The nurse knocked softly before she entered. “You’re awake!” the nurse said as she came into the room, closing the door behind her. “They told me… I mean… Well, you’ve been asleep since I started working here. We were beginning to wonder… Oh! I’m so sorry. My name is Betsy. I’m the day nurse on your case.”
Kaylee watched as the pretty black nurse walked over to the side of her bed. “Where am I?” she asked. Her own voice surprised her. It was barely more than a whisper. “How long have I been here? What happened?”
Betsy looked almost frightened at the questions. She glanced nervously back at the door. “I had better call your sister.” She said as she backed up towards the door. “I’ll let her explain everything to you.” Betsy was out the door before Kaylee could say anything.
Kaylee watched as Betsy spoke with some else at the nurse’s station, both of them glancing cautiously at Kaylee’s room as they talked. After a moment, Betsy picked up the phone on the desk and began dialing. Kaylee began to feel tired again. She decided to close her eyes for another moment of rest, and allowed herself to drift back to sleep.
