4 years after Remus Lupin finished at Hogwarts
Remus Lupin POV
I watched her carefully, waiting for her to begin crying, she didn't.
"Midenius," I started. She just shook her head. She had been like this for days. She wouldn't speak, or eat, or sleep or anything. It was like when Beatrix was in hospital, except worse.
"Midenius please, can you just tell me what happened." She looked at me for a minute, then took a deep breath.
"I was, making some veritserem, for Severus. I had put Gracie to bed, she must have followed me out of her room or something. Anyway so I went to get the ingredients out of my potions cupboard I left it open, I was only turned around for maybe a minute, but, when I did turn back around, she was just lying there, on the ground completely still. I thought she was parilysed, I tried to help her but I..." She choked on her tears and couldn't finish her sentence. I pulled her into my arms and stroked her hair gently.
"This is all my fault." Her words were strangled and muffled. "Shh, shh. It is absolutely not your fault. It was just.." I didnt know what to say. "So little, I cant believe she is dead," Midenius gasped. It was strange to hear her say that. But, it was true, and for the first time, I registered that at just two years old my daughter, Gracie Lupin, my tiny fragile baby girl was gone. I felt tears in my eyes. I had thought that Gracie would live long after Midenius and I, but she wouldnt. She wouldnt do anything, because she was gone. I closed my eyes to clear them of the tears.
"Why is everything always ruined?" Midenius asked looking up at me watery and puffy eyes. "I dont know, but I do know that you and I, we've been together for 9 years, and we're going to stay together, no matter what, forever. That is something that will never be ruined, I promise. Ok?" Midenius wiped her eyes, which was pointless because they just refilled with tears anyway, and she nodded. "Forever," she replied. Before leaning back into my arms and continuing to sob into my chest.
