Carly stepped over the dirty clothing spewed across her bedroom floor. She was tired of being asked to pick them up yet she was definitely too lazy to give in. Carly's mother liked to see her daughter's room clean so that she could continue to feel as though she still had a small drop of control over Carly's life.
As she padded quietly to her bathroom she couldn't help but feel a sense of horror wash over her. School was starting and that meant people, lots of filthy people. Carly hated being around large groups of other people. She hated small talk and gossip. The never ending bullshit lies and fake parades of stupid people. She enjoyed being cynical and often took pride in being able to see through the frame of false perfection. Being able to see the raw truth that lay below every single one of her peers. She had to admit that there were a few students that she didn't mind but she was never one to hold onto friends. She found that people changed so much every year, only to try and scrape their way up the social ladder. She was revolted by how well she could know someone one year and by the next they may be a complete stranger. She stared herself in the mirror and sighed. Her hair was frizzy, eyes sunken and her lips were dry and chapped. Sadly it was too easy to tell that she spent most of her summer indoors. If she hadn't been working at the local grocery store, Fresh Foods, she was at home watching movies, Netflix, and drawing. Her mother had begged her for the first month of summer to get out and do something, but eventually gave up. Carly had been angry with her mother and would stay that way for as long as she felt necessary. She didn't want to listen to her mother's antics, but now staring at her face in her dirty mirror, Carly had a pang of regret, and thought that maybe she should have spent a little bit more time outside.
She stood there poking and prodding at her dull skin for about five minutes before stepping into the shower. Once dry she walked into her bedroom to find something clean to wear. Pulling on a loose knit sweater, a pair of ripped blue jeans and a grey scarf, over her under garments, she stared at her bed feeling as though that PJ's seemed way comfier right now. Carly rarely wore makeup but she felt that drawing in stares on the first day wouldn't be such a good idea. So back in her bathroom she applied some concealer, powder, blush and mascara. Her hair was long and dark. It fell close to her waist, perfectly straight, leaving her petite figure seeming almost smaller. Carly loved her hair and took pride in it. It was the only thing that reminded her of her father. His Japanese roots were visible in Carly's features. Although, her large green eyes and oval face gave way to her mother's side of the family, who were all European.
She combed her fingers through her hair as she stared into the fridge, unable to decide on what to eat for breakfast. Yogurt sounded nice and easy but the bacon in the meat drawer made her mouth water. Peeking around at the clock to see how much time until she had to leave, she let out a sigh. Yogurt it is.
"Honey you look darling! And is that perfume I smell?!" Her mother clambered into the kitchen carrying her brief case and computer bag, while trying to balance her phone and water bottle in one hand. She was dressed for court and had on a white pencil skirt, matching a white blazer with a blue blouse underneath. Her large breasts were extremely visible and her heels left her sticking out her rear end.
Carly's mother is a defense lawyer, meaning she kept criminals out of prison, how wonderful of her. Carly scowled at her mothers words, ignoring her and continued to serve herself some breakfast and tea. She sat at the long dining counter on top of a tall stool and slowly ate while flipping through Tumbler. She didn't speak with her mother and chose to ignore most of what she said. Carly hated hypocrites, and her mum was the biggest one yet.
After eating she took a moment to get all of her school supplies together, grabbed her black coat, pulled on a pair of brown combat boots and walked out of her house. She breathed in the cool air, stared at her car and realized that this was the first day, of her last year in high school.
"Let's get this over with." She said under her breath as she unlocked her car doors.
