The next morning Nicki let Drake sleep while she went to handle some business.

First she went to his lawyer to see if he could make sure that after the trial they wouldn't issue a warrant out and Drake could just turn himself in. That way she'd get a little more time with him before he had to go.

He assured Nicki that there wouldn't be a warrant and she also asked him another important question.

"Mr. Brown, if you were Aubrey, what would you plead?"

"Well, they have evidence against him so his best bet is to plead guilty and sound remorseful and responsible for his actions. The jury loves when people are sorry and take responsibility and when they plead guilty, they usually get the shortest sentence possible."

"So what would be his maximum sentence."

"Life."

"And his minimum?"

"Probably a five to ten."

"Wow."

"Are you two married?"

"He got arrested the day before our wedding."

"Do you live together?"

"Yes."

"How long?"

"About two years now...why?"

"Because if you two are married then you will get to see him more often. Federal Prison has a few perks for him in his given circumstances."

"But we aren't married."

"Yes you are. Common law marriage counts too. You two have been living together for over a year. That's common law marriage. He'll have more time during visits, personal time with you and you will get to see him once a week and twice every third week. I know it's not much but that's the best I can do."

"And the bad side?"

"The bad side is that you'll have to wait until they send a letter saying he can have visits."

"How long would that take?"

"Anywhere from four to six months. Depending on his behavior."

"A minimum of four months without seeing him?! You've gotta be kidding me."

"I'm serious."

"I appreciate your help. So will he be going back to the same precinct?"

"The judge decides."

"And what exactly is he being charged with?"

He sat down and looked over some notes. "Looks like tax evasions, conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance, having drug paraphernalia, and a few murders were linked to some guns found in the homes of other people that he's taking responsibility for."

"Tax evasions? I hate those Feds. They just make up anything. If I bring back his paperwork from his tax returns, can you get that thrown out?"

"Of course. That's one thing the government hates. Tax evasions...they would've made him seem like the biggest asshole. But once they're thrown out, I can say at least he did his part with the government. I need anything that may help him by Friday. The trial starts Monday."

"Okay. Thank you." Nicki shook his hand and left and then she called Ashley on a cell phone that she had gotten that was in one of her cousin's names from the islands. She wasn't taking any chances. She knew the only way she wouldn't get caught was with Ashley on her side and she knew Ashley would help her because not only did she feel horribly guilty, but she also loved Drake.
