A mother; she who can take the place of all others but whose place no one else can take.
Soft humming filled the cave as a tiny white furball snuggled closer to her mother's belly fur amongst the pile of squirming black and grey. The cave was cool but the litter was warm, curled up sweetly to the side of the cave. Outside the large entrance, snowflakes speckled the ground, creating a thin blanket over the pebbles and cliffs outside their den. Far off howls filled the night and the low whistling of wind on rock provided soft background noise for the otherwise silent, snowy world outside. Silver moonlight gleamed through the cave entrance and through cracks in the ceiling, illuminating the mother wolf as she hummed her lullaby, ears flat and eyes closed.
The pups were just past two weeks old now, meaning their eyes would be opening any minute. Finally the pups had made it to their first full moon, they were ready to be named.
The whole pack was out joining in with the song and no one would do otherwise until very early morning, but the mother wolf would not join in the choir outside. On the last note of her lullaby the light washing in from one of the cracks intensified and illuminated the white in between the other masses. The cracked and eye open and wiggled to look around, squirming around on top of her brothers, and the mother heard the moon speak her name.
"Maya."
The cave slowly cooled back down to its normal, silver glow and the mother sighed affectionately. She turned her head to the pup and rubbed her pink belly with her ebony nose. "Maya..." she sang. The pups tony white ears perked at the sound of her mother's voice and twitched. "Maya..." She rubbed her nose on the pup's head from which the pup squirmed away from. "Your name will be, Maya."
