Prologue

A girl runs through the forest, heaving in breathes of air. She is only two months shy of her fourth birthday. Snow crunches under her feet. He's coming for her. The Monster Man is coming. Even though she knows she is not normal, he is a monster and nothing more.

She had heard her parents talking about the monsters, when she was in her room pretending to sleep at night. She would listen to them talk about all the different kinds of monsters. About what they did, who they were. And they would also talk about her, how she seemed different to them. Her parents knew already that she would not be like her father, but like her mother. The girl's father was normal, he wasn't a monster, but he always knew what they were. Her mother, however, was a monster, but the girl didn't find her scary at all. She was kind and gentle and you could go around their neighborhood and everyone would tell you:

"She's so friendly to all the children."

"She will spend her weekends at the shelter if she can. Always helping out."

"I hear that last week she stopped Marcie's husband from beating her when he was drunk. Can you believe it? Such a brave woman."

And yet now, the girl's mother was not there to help. Not there to save the girl from the Monster Man. She wasn't there to protect her.

The girl trips over a root sticking out of the ground. She falls and lands on the cold earth, hard, knocking what little breath remain in her, out. Shaking, the girl pushes herself up off the ground. She can't run anymore, she just can't. Her legs won't carry her and her lungs refuse to breath when she is moving. The girl walks over to the tree that tripped her and she sits down, leaning against it. Gulping in deep breaths of air, she brushes some of the dirt off her skirt and ripped tights.

She needed to find someone to help her, but in the middle of the woods? What if she was alone, what if the Monster Man had stopped chasing her? The girl pulls her legs up to her chest and rubs her hands together. She listens for any sound that the Monster Man might make. Grunts, moans, anything. Nothing, there is not a sound in the frigid winter air. The girl release a heavy sigh. He wasn't there, the Monster Man wasn't there. She puts her head against the tree and closes her eyes. Her skirt still covered in dirt and arms and legs with small cuts, the young girl begins to nod off.

Then all of a sudden a hand with long claws grabs her arm. Her scream, ripping through the frozen air for no one to hear. The Monster Man had found her. His other hand pressed against her mouth, and he lifts her into the air. She can feel the claws against her face The girl struggles to be freed, kicking her legs at him. He removes his hand from her arm. Now was her chance! Now was her chance to run. She starts clawing at his hand on her mouth as he puts her on the ground. His hand moves away. The girl instantly starts to run, not even caring where she went. She just ran and as she did she could hear the Monster Man laughing, a high pitched laugh. Running faster now she spots a hollow tree up ahead. A place she could hide and get some rest.

Whoosh!

The Monster Man, who has just dropped out of a tree, lands right in front of her. She turns to run the other way, but she trips and he starts dragging her backwards. Screaming out for someone to help her, she digs her fingers into the frozen ground. She is flipped onto her back and she sees him. She looks straight at the Monster Man for the first time. His face is deformed and grey, with a small amount of white fur on his head. She can barely see his eyes. She wants to start crying, she is so helpless. And she does cry, full out tears streaming down her face. The Monster man stares at her angerly and he holds her head still with one hand.

"Stop crying." he says in a high sounding voice.

The girl would have, if she hadn't seen his teeth. They are all long and pointed, with a little bit of blood visible in the dim moonlight light. She starts to sob even harder. The Monster Man makes a sound of outrage and claws out the young girls eye. She screams out in agony and warm blood trickles down her face. She hears the monster licking off his long light grey fingers The heavy load is lifted from her shoulders and she is raised into the air. She doesn't even fight back, she is in to much pain. Her body is dropped on the ground against a tree and she hears the Monster Man walking away. She opens her left eye to look at him, only he isn't the Monster Man anymore. He is just a man. A man with light brown hair and dark black eyes. He stares back at her and frowns. Then, he runs up to the girl and claws out her other eye.

"Daphne!"

The girl on the ground awakes at the sound of the call. She does not open her eyes though, because they still pain her greatly.

"Daphne!"

A different voice this time calls her name.

"Daphne! Where are you?"

She wants to call out to them, but she is far to weak. No strength is left in her to even make a sound.

"Daphne?"

She hears footsteps approaching her.

"Daphne?" the voice is louder this time, closer.

"Daphne?"

The footsteps suddenly stop.

"Daphne!"

She hears someone rush over to her. They grab her tight in their arms.

"Oh gosh, Daphne." she recognizes it as her mothers voice.

"Who did this to you? What happened?"

"Monster." Daphne manages to croak out of her dry cold throat.

"What was that, sweetie? Mama didn't hear, what did you say?"

"Monster." she says it a little louder this time and coughs a little, with a drop of blood exiting her right eye.

Daphne feels her mother stiffen up beside her. Then, she begins to shake, and cry out asking someone, why this had to happen. She hears a howl that sounds like it has come from an animal in pain very close to her. And that's when she blacks out.
