Chapter Two
But, it was true. About four years after that day, at about five in the morning; an almost eight year old Daphne Teston lays beneath her bed, staring at the underside of her mattress. Her real mother and father were dead, and she was a Grimm. She still didn't understand it all because her fake mother avoided the subject as much as possible.
As for her eyes, they had healed. The doctors had said that if she didn't have surgery on her eyes, she would have never been able to see again. Right after the surgery her vision would sometimes blur for a few seconds. That didn't last for long though, the same with the strong sense of smell and sensitive hearing.
She hadn't learned of the Monster Man who attacked her all those years ago, and the other Grimm by the name of Smithers never spoke to her again. She often felt lost and alone. She had moved from Chicago to Seattle just in late December. Now it was three hours until she would go to her new school. In her last school, everyone had avoided her. With this new school, she would expect no difference. She spent most of her time during breaks drawing what she saw. She never learned the names, the only ones she knew were Fuchsbau, Wesen and Grimm. She often drew her fake mother. She had patches of white fur around her eyes and jewel green eyes. She had asked her mother to show herself to her again, but she refused.
"I don't want to make you uncomfortable." she had said.
Daphne really thought that she was only saying that to avoid telling her about this world of Wesen.
Her uncle, who was her fake father, said that she was still to young to learn. That maybe when she thirteen, he would tell her. Thirteen? She was almost eight, she could handle it.
Daphne laid under her bed until she heard footsteps coming down the hall. She quickly crawled out and ran over to her desk. She grabbed a pencil and paper and quickly drew the outline of a tree.
Her door opens.
"Oh, you're already up." her aunt walks into the room. "It's awfully dark in here, how can you see?"
Roxane laughs. Daphne merely sits there quietly, sketching her pine tree.
"Are you nervous at all?"
"A little." Daphne replies. "I don't want to get in trouble with any monsters."
Her aunts' expression darkens a little.
"No monsters will be at your school, I promise you that."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes." she says after a slight pause.
"Tell me, what do you want for breakfast? Maybe you'll feel better after you eat some food."
"Just toast." she quietly answers.
"Really?" she widens her eyes. "Nothing special for you're first day at your new school?"
"Nope. Just toast with honey and butter."
"Do you want chocolate milk or juice?"
"Just plain milk." she mumbles.
"Okay then. One order of honey and butter toast with milk coming right up!" her aunt grins and walks out of the room.
Why couldn't her aunt decide? Daphne would either have a normal life or a not so normal one, not both. She always felt as if she was being pulled in every direction. She was never decided, and she wasn't sure if she wanted too be.
