“Hailey!” I heard Karl shout my name, panic seeping through his voice.
I swallowed hard, coming back to my senses at the sound of my friends voice, at least he was ok.
“Karl,” I sniffled as I rushed to the drawers next to the door to fish out my key.
“Yeah,” He breathed as I finally managed to pull out my key and lock the door.
“I’m scared, come get me.” I choked out as my body finally gave into the fear. Sobs racked my body, forcing me to slowly crumple to the floor in a crying heap.
It took several minutes of Karl shouting through the phone, to finally calm me down, and pull myself together. I wiped the tears from my cheeks and climbed to my feet, as my breathing slowed down to a somewhat sane level.
I couldn’t believe it, one night, one night and suddenly there was ravenous Zombies roaming the streets. I had to the check this out for myself; this couldn’t be true it just couldn’t. Zombies were just in movies, that’s all.
I tiptoed my way to the window, which was still covered up by my cream blinds, blocking my view of the outside world. My hand shook as I reached for the edge of the blind. I crouched down and used the wall to hide my body. With a deep breath, I peeled back the fabric, opening a small gap that instantly flooded my flat with streaks of sun light.
It took me a second to blink away the light invading my eyes, I was still hung-over okay? My eyes adjusted to the light, allowing me to see the horror unfolding outside.
Chaos, everything was chaos. Cars, strewn all over the street, some on fire, some lay abandoned and all of them were wrecked. Debris littered the streets, blowing wistfully in the wind. The lone convenient store, surrounded by flat complexes, had its windows smashed, with goods littering the floor around it. My eyes landed on the most disturbing part of it all, the ravenous creatures moaning and walking around, blood coating there yellow skin and torn clothes. Not another human in sight, alive, that is.
Holy shit, I’m screwed. I’m so screwed.
“You still there Hails?” Karl asked.
I nodded my head sheepishly, my eyes unable to focus from the horror in front of me, before I realised that Karl couldn’t see me. I quickly whispered back. “Yeah I’m here, and I’m not happy about it at all.”
Instantly Karl’s loud panicked voice filled up my ear. “Why, what’s wrong. What’s happening? Hailey, you locked the door didn’t you, damn it Hailey, tell me you locked the door-”
“Karl!” I shouted, trying to get him to shut up and listen to me. He stopped lecturing me mid way just before breathing out a frustrated breath that I quickly copied. “I’m fine; I just wish I was with you thats all.”
I could practically feel Karl relax through the phone as he sighed and hummed in understanding. With that, I quickly shut the blind, after double checking that the window was locked. I didn’t want to see those creatures. As Karl began to talk, I made my way back to the sofa, pulling my knees securely up to my chest as I listened to his relaxing tone.
“I know, I wish I was there with you too.” He sighed.
“Then why aren’t you?” I snapped, but it wasn’t in a mean way, more hurt.
“I had to go home Hails, my family needed me.” I nodded my head, and suddenly felt my stomach and heart clench. Family shit, my family. Oh god I hoped they were ok. I snapped out of my thoughts by the most distressing sound in the world, my best friend crying and choking on his words. “I-I was, oh god Hails, I was too fucking late.”
I pulled my knees tighter into myself as my best friend in the whole wide world cried desperately through the phone. I felt my own eyes start to water, but I desperately tried to keep my voice level as I spoke. “Karl, I’m so sorry.”
“I walked in-” He choked, barely able to get the words out. He took a deep calming breath before continuing. “I fucking walked in on my little brother eating my mum.”
I gasped instantly in horror, flinging my hand to cover my mouth. I knew Karl’s family; they were like my second family. I couldn’t imagine how horrifying that must have been for Karl to see. I felt sick to my stomach. “That’s horrible.”
“I know,” Karl sighed. His tears must have stopped, because his voice suddenly grew deep and cold. It sent a horrible icy chill down my spine as he spoke. “None of that matters now anyway, I killed them both and now they’re gone. All that matters is that we find each other okay?”
I gulped, feeling my throat close up. Karl killed his mum and brother. I couldn’t handle this, all of it; I was going to explode soon if something good didn’t happen. I didn’t know how much more my heart could handle. “Okay. Where are you, are you at home still?”
“No!” Came Karl’s sharp reply.
I must have hit a nerve, of course I did. I’m so stupid. He just killed his only family there, why would he stick around after doing that.
Stupid Hailey.
“I’m sorr-“I began, but I was quickly cut off.
“It’s cool. I’m actually not too far from you actually, just a couple of streets over at the Welbeck Hotel. I’ve barricaded myself into room 305 on the third floor.”
“Great, so you’re gonna come get me then.” I asked hopefully.
“I would Hailey-“He answered, but I could hear the ‘but’ in his tone even before he spoke it. “But, I twisted my ankle while being chased by a group of flesh eaters. Bastards nearly got me.”
“Are you okay, they didn’t hurt you did they,” I quickly interrupted as the horrible images flashed across my eyes.
“No, thank god.” He sighed, but that didn’t stop the uncomfortable knot from unravelling in my stomach.
Karl couldn’t come get me; I’d have to go out there, with the flesh eaters all on my own. I’m not the sportiest person in the world, I’ve never shot a gun in my life, and I’m not that good of at long distance running. Things weren’t turning out well for me. I felt the panic stricken feeling in my gut rear up, as tears threatened to burst from my eyes.
“Karl,” I breathed, shaking my head and closing my eyes. “What am I going to do?”
