MISTAKEN PROPOSAL
Chapter One
“Are you almost done packing?” My roommate, Eli asked.
“Yes, I just have to pack my carry on,” I replied.
“God, girls take forever to pack!” he groaned.
We both go to Gallagher’s School for the Elite, which is really just a fancy word for boarding school. Gallagher’s is a seventh through twelfth grade school, and we’ve both been roommates since seventh.
Gallagher’s has co-ed dorms, meaning if you’re a girl, your roommate is a guy and vice versa. Supposedly there’s been studies done that teenagers are least likely to abuse their privileges when they have more of them. I don’t know. It was explained on the first day of school, but really? Who listens to that? All I know is that it’s common knowledge that you’re going to end up in bed with your roommate at one point or another.
Eli and I have actually gotten close throughout school. We were the same age, to the date (December 24). We liked a lot of the same things, which sounds really dorky, I know.
“Just keep tossing your football, rich boy,” I snorted.
“It’s not too late to make you stay here!” he threatened.
“But we both know you wouldn’t do that,” I remarked.
He shut up after that. He wouldn’t do that, we both knew it. It just wasn’t something Eli would do, especially because it took him a full week to convince me to go with him. You see, we were both going to Alaska (where Eli was from) for Christmas break, which is the full month of December and the beginning of January.
He’d practically begged me to go with him when he found out I had to stay here for my birthday, Christmas, and New Year’s. My oh-so-fabulous family was going to Prague, but I couldn’t go because, well, let’s face it, the guest list was full. Yeah, full my ass. The guest list wouldn’t have been full if my wonderful sister didn’t have to bring her boyfriend, and her gay best friend.
“I wouldn’t,” he mumbled.
“I don’t even see why you’re complaining, our flight doesn’t leave until tomorrow, so what’s the matter if I take forever to pack now?”
“Well…I was hoping that you and I could…,” he trailed off, and I got what he was saying.
“ELI! NO!” I said, angrily, “I’m not like the whore of a roommate that Jack has. You should know that by now! It pisses me off that you don’t know that now!”
“I was joking, relax. I know you’re not like Jacqueline, Miss Virgin,” he sighed.
“How would you know?” I hissed.
“Well it’s not like you’re ever out late, and when you are, I am too, and we were together the whole night. There’s no way,” he rolls his eyes.
“I hate you,” I say, my words dripping venom.
“I never said it was a bad thing, Sam,” he says apologetically.
“Just shut up before you dig yourself a deeper hole you can’t get out of,” I hissed.
“I’m sorry, Sam.”
“Just shut up!”
“I--.”
“If you want laid, go see Jacqueline,” I snarled.
“I was JOKING!” he yelled. I didn’t care enough to reply any further, so I ignored him. I continued packing, all but the things I needed in the morning to get ready.
I lay down on my bed, ignoring the sad look on Eli’s face as he watched me. I grabbed my MacBook, and started typing. I was a writer at heart, and I wrote best when I was pissed.
“I’m going to go take a shower now so you can have the shower in the morning,” Eli mumbled and walked into our en-suite.
“’Kay,” I said harshly.
I finished a chapter and then changed into a pair of shorts and a tank top to wear to bed. I pulled my reddish-brown hair into a ponytail. I turned on the TV and flipped through the channels, before setting on some movie made in the nineties.
Eli came out, still looking glum. He was shirtless, as usual. I’d learned not to gawk and stare at his [amazing] body. He was built nicely, with large biceps that weren’t too big, but just perfect. He had a six pack, so he was ripped without being ew-gross-ripped. He was wearing only his Superman boxer-briefs. Eli was a nerd at heart, but Mr. Rich and Popular on the outside.
I watched him in the corner of my eyes as he lay down to go to sleep. It was tradition that he hugs me before locking the door and going to sleep. He’s skipping both the door and the hug. I sighed and walked to the bathroom to take off the little make-up I had on.
I looked in the mirror, but a bright pink post-it note partially covered my face.
‘I’m really, really sorry, Sam. I didn’t mean it like that.’
It read, and I smiled to myself. Eli was really sweet at heart. I took off my make-up and brushed my teeth. I walked back to the main part of the room. Eli lay on his back, studying the ceiling. I lay down on top of him, wrapping my arms around his neck.
“I’m sorry I went off, Eli,” I mumbled into his chest, and his arms wrapped around me.
“I shouldn’t have said anything,” he replied.
“It’s okay, I really should learn how to take a joke,” I said.
“Goodnight, Samantha,” he kissed my forehead, but didn’t let me go.
“Goodnight, Elliott,” I kissed his cheek, but he still didn’t unwrap his arms.
“Just sleep here tonight,” he mumbled, and I snuggled into the warmth that was Eli.
