Chapter Nine
“Sam…are you ready? We have to pick your family up at the port,” Eli asks. I nod, and grab Eli’s hand as we go outside. I sit in the passenger seat of his car nervously. Eli starts the car, and turns to stare at me.
“What?” I ask, and he kisses me.
“You’re just amazing,” he shrugs. I smile, and feel less nervous. Eli pulls out of the driveway, and hums along to song on the radio.
“Eli,” I sigh, and he turns to look at me worriedly.
“What’s wrong?”
“My family…they’re different. They’re rude and crude and cold. I just thought I’d warn you…,” I admit.
“Sam, I don’t care if your family is different. I like you for you, I’m not going to judge you by your family. We’ve been best friends since seventh grade, they’re not going to change anything,” he smiles at me, and kisses me lightly on the lips.
“I’d kiss you better than that, but I’m driving, and I might crash,” he laughs, and I smile.
We drive to the port, and I see the boat off in a distance.
“Are you cold?” Eli asks, and puts his scarf, gloves and hat on me.
“Thanks,” I smile, and see the boat docking.
“Samantha!” My mom smiles and hugs me.
“Mom, I like Sam better,” I insist for the millionth time.
“I named you Samantha, and that’s what I will call you. Now, let me see your ring,” she says and I hold up my hand, pulling off the glove. She studies it, and smiles. Well, at least the ring is satisfactory.
“Where’s this boy of yours?” she asks.
“Mom, this is Eli,” I said, as Eli walked up.
“Nice to meet you, Mrs. Ellis,” he shook her hand, and she smiled. Well, at least he’s satisfactory, too.
“Oh! I better go help with the luggage,” Eli said, and helped my dad load the luggage in the car.
“Elliott Ford, right?” my sister, Kia walks up.
“Yeah,” I smile.
“His family owns like this whole town, right?” she asks, and my heart sinks. How could she know that?
“Yeah…,” I say softly.
“I went to school with his older brother!” she laughs, “He was a jerk.”
“Oh, okay,” I mumble, and then add, “How’re things with Andrew?”
“We broke up last week,” she says.
“Oh, sorry.” I say, but I realize that I’m not actually sorry at all.
“Sammy!” My dad wrapped me in a hug. My dad and I got along better than I did with any of my other family members.
We drove home and let them settle in the guest rooms. I went back to my room, and sat down on the edge of the bed. Well, that wasn’t entirely terrible. They’re being tolerable.
“That wasn’t bad, now was it,” Eli asked and kissed me.
“No, it was…it was pretty good,” I admit.
“Just think, we’re getting married tomorrow,” he says.
“That’s kind of scary,” I mumble.
“Would marrying me really be that bad?” he asks.
“No, that’s not what I meant,” I insisted.
“I know, I’m just giving you a hard time,” he laughs, and kisses me.
“I really hate to interrupt, but can I steal Sam away from you for a moment?” my sister asks in the doorway.
“Sure,” Eli says, and pecks me on the lips and leaves. Kia sits on the bed beside me.
“I’m sorry I’ve always been a total bitch to you. I-I…I guess I’ve just always been jealous. You’re amazing at everything, and you’re the pretty sister. And now, you’re getting married, Sam. You’re marrying Eli. I…I just want to be friends,” she apologizes. Wow, my sister just apologized.
“It’s okay, in reality I always thought you were the perfect sister. Mom and Dad love you, you’re brilliant!” I said.
“I guess we just misunderstood each other,” she laughs and hugs me.
“You’re so lucky. Eli is a hottie! And I’ve seen the way he looks at you; he loves you. You guys make a really cute couple,” she said.
“Thanks,” I smiled.
“Well, I’ll leave you alone so you and your fiancée can make out before rehearsal dinner,” she winks.
