Chapter 1

"Bye!"
I waved as my friend's mom pulled out of the drive way with Kristi sitting in the front passenger seat of the blue mini van. Turning on my heels, I raced up to my door and fumbled arounf in my bag for my keys. Kristi and I spent the last finishing homework and talking about school. Gossip was never the same each day.
Two cats greeted me as I walked in, both looking for food. Leaving my bag at the door, I scooped out the kibble and put it in their bowls. My female, Demi, sat down and started eating until my male (Badger), kicked her out and she took the other bowl.
Grabbing a banana, I headed to the back yard and sat down in my tire swing. Soon, Momma would be home with Joey, my five-year-old brother.
Taking out my book, I began to read. I hardly ever read. But when I find a good book, I fly through it way to fast. I got this one about two days ago and I only had about 15 out of 128 pages left.
In less then 10 minutes, I unhappily closed the book. Glancing at my watch, I jumped down from the swing and went inside to do my chores. Nothing but the usual. Put the dishes in the dish washer, put away my laundry, hang up my brother's laundry, and clean the litter boxes. But not all of those were to be done today. Just the dishes. Leaving my phone on the counter, I walked over to the sink while turning on the television.
"Sixteen and Pregnant" was on. Not my favorite, but I will survive.
As I put everything in their place and turned it on, I thought over my list of gifts to give Joey. He was turning 6 on Thursday this week.
Hearing Momma's car pull in, I quickly ran to the couch and plopped down. Turning it on, the Norton Weather station flashed on. I switched it to Disney Channel for Joey. By now, it was 3:40 in the afternoon and "Shake It Up" was on. Joey had a crush on Ce Ce, one of the main characters on the show. He always tried to copy her moves, but rarely was successful. I preferred adult shows, but I only got to watch them when Joey is sleeping or isn't home. Every episode will have something that Momma doesn't want him seeing or knowing about just yet.
Counting down the seconds from when the car door slammed, I prepared my self for a bunch of new things on Joey's birthday wish list. We had two papers, both full, hanging up on the refrigerator door with a bunch of toys written on them that he wrote down in the first week of May.
Joey came bursting into the living room and jumped on the love seat across from me. "I know what I want the most now!" he yelled as his baseball cap came off. I giggled and asked him what it was now. "I want a football!" he said. As Momma came in, he sat down, remembering the rule. Momma laughed and sat down next to him, her blonde hair tied up in a messy bun from all day at the shelter.
The television flashed from one picture to the next during the commercial. When it got back to the show, Joey jumped up as he heard Rocky's (another character) voice. Momma and I left the room and headed off to the kitchen. Today, she was going to teach me how to make chicken for dinner. Daddy would be home about 30 minutes before it was ready.
After putting the bird in the oven, I made myself a small salad. The only meats I enjoy are chicken and steak. But I can't eat to much of either without something green to go with it.
Running to my room, I grabbed my bag and got out my science book. I am a straight A and A+ student, but, sadly, last time I forgot to study (thanks to all the other teachers' homework), and got a 64. I still haven't told Momma or talked to the teacher like he asked.
Once I got into my bedroom, I could relax. The only reason Momma would come in was to give me something or to wake me up after sleeping in when my alarm clock brakes.
Going through my section, I begin to fall asleep. But as soon as my face hit that book, I jerked awake. So, instead, to keep me alive until I go to bed, I started going through my summer clothes to see what I needed and what I could keep from last year. After teaching my best friend Kristi about baseball last school year so that she would understand what her new boyfriend Seth, the school's star baseball player, was talking about, she taught me about style in clothing.
Kristi is the smartest and nicest girl I know. She never has short hair. The only time she wears it up is when she's tanning. Her hair is blond with a few light ginger highlights, all natural. Her eyes are a deep blue and her smile only fades when she's not around people and is upset. Even when she cries around others, she has a smile on. She isn't a drama queen, but is a great actress. Always, always, always does she dress cute. Never casual. She sticks out without drawing to much attention to herself.
Then there is Eddy. He is like one of the guys you see on television and in movies who hang around with the two best friends (girls) since Pre-K. Except Eddy is a bit more socialized. He has a few other friends who are dudes, but he doesn't hang out with them as much as he does with Kristi and I. Eddy has short brown hair with green eyes. During the summer, his freckles come out after a few hours in the blazing sun. Jeans and a simple tee-shirt, maybe a baseball cap to and from school.
Just as I finished separating my clothes that fit me from the clothes that don't, I heard Momma calling me down for dinner. Looking out my window, I saw that Daddy had already came home.
