Hey everyone! So I've tried multiple times to write a good fan fiction, but every time they just seem to not work out and I end up deleting them. I have high hopes for this one, because I was just reading a usual fanfic when I came up with this idea! This is my own story and there is a possibility you could see some similarities to other books, fanfics, or movies you've seen. All of the characters I will write about are fictional. I do have Harry Styles as one of the main characters, but his characteristics are entirely made up of my imagination. Although this book does contain him, it is open to everyone, not just One Direction fans:). I got my inspiration from a well known book, The Fifth Wave, by Rick Yancey. If you wish to use references from my book I allow that as long as you source it and let me know. Plagiarism is illegal and I do not allow it so if anyone uses my words without source, I'd appreciate it if you could let me know. This book is copywrited. Also if you have seen the title you are probably familiar with the famous book and/or movie. I've never seen or read the book so I don't even know what it's about, lol, but I like the name and it fits what my book is about. I think that's allowed because I know there's lots of books and movies with the same name?? Lol. I am very crazy about spelling issues and grammar problems and I hate when I'm reading a fanfic with mistakes so please let me know and help me if I have any!!! And I don't really know anything about nuclear explosions so I'm just writing as I think it would happen. Please feel free to leave tips and/or ideas about the book!

No one expected it to happen when it did. I mean we all knew it was going to happen, but we just figured it wouldn't be in our time. It happened last week on a Sunday afternoon; August 14th. My only worries were of going into My family consisted of Melanie, my little sister who is 2, my mom, my dad, Derrick, my little brother who is 1, and myself. I am 15. We all sat out on the front lawn at our beach house, the salty breeze rustling through the tall dry grass. At around 15:49 (I will be using military time so beware lol. If you are not familiar, subtract 12 hours from 13 o'clock and above to get a PM time) The ground started shaking. My family and I live in California so we just assumed it was an earthquake as they are frequent here. But then the sky turned ash grey, and the ocean became very distressed. A metal-like smell came into the air.
Flashback-
"EVERYBODY GET INSIDE NOW!" My dad screamed, a trickle of fear detected in his voice. We were all confused as to why he was making such a big deal out of a silly earthquake, but we followed him anyway because we were all scared. I grabbed Melanie and Derrick and ran inside, following my dad right to the coat closet. Of all places?? Is this a prank? The look on my mom's face told me she was confused also. My father parted the coats, revealing a metal door with a big lock on it, resembling a safe that banks have. He typed in the combination and a green light flashed. The door automatically opened, and my father entered, with all of us nervously trailing behind. A steep pathway lead down two flights of stairs to a big room with 5 cots, a bathroom, and a large pantry with a refrigerator inside it.
"What the hell is this?!" My mom said, in awe.
"I have to explain something to you," my father said, sitting us all down on a couch in the middle.
