The next day had come and gone, and Hannah was sitting back in her original room, waiting for the results of her test. After what seemed like another ten minutes, she dozed off. It wasn't too long until the sound of the door opening roused her from her slumber, and she heard the sound of feet pacing to the counter to her left. It wasn't Dr. House.
Hannah opened her eyes and tilted her head towards the new doctor, but even though she could tell it was another man, everything was blurry. She was feeling dizzy again. "Okay, so, it says here that you could be in the beginning stages of colon cancer, Miss Dadario." So House hadn't told him her real- wait... That voice, it couldn't be...
"Mhm," Hannah grunted, trying to hide her confusion and shock. After so long, could it really be him? They had spoken just days before, but he didn't know who she really was. Yet, anyway.
She watched, vision growing ever clearer, as he set down his checklist and reach into one of the cabinets to find some latex gloves. Of course, proper procedure when dealing with a patient. "You know, I was the one who was trying to set up an appointment with you just a couple of days ago, remem-" as he spoke, he turned to face Hannah. Her suspicions were one hundred percent verified.
"James?" She felt tears sting her eyes and the taste of bile rising in her throat as she spoke the single syllable name she'd grown to love. She could hear by the heart monitor that her heartbeat has raised significantly, not that she needed more proof - it felt like her heart was beating out of her chest. Hannah grew short of breath again, and by instinct Dr. Wilson briskly made his way over to her and enveloped her in a long overdue hug, stroking her hair in a calming way. She didn't even notice, not that she minded. Hannah knew he didn't care either.
They were both freely crying now, three years of pent up emotions finally being able to surface. Hannah was more of a mess than Wilson was, taking gasping sobs as she clutched to the back of his lad coat. "I missed you so much," was all she could manage to string together into one sentence without breaking down even more.
"I know, I missed you too," came the calm and whispered response. By now, even though the heart monitor had calmed down, nurses would have been alerted about her condition. It nearly killed both of them to let go, Hannah more so than the oncologist. They just had enough time to wipe the tears from their eyes and compose themselves before two people Hannah remembered from her earlier tests - Doctors Cameron and Chase - rushed into the room.
"Is everything alright?" the brunette asked, hurrying to Hannah's side.
She nodded, mustering up a teary smile. "Yeah, thank you. Just, you know, shocked by the news. Colon cancer, wow." Hannah looked up at Wilson again, the smile growing a little duller.
"Alright," came the Australian accent Hannah was still getting used to hearing, "just try not to get too worked up, alright? We don't want your heart failing again."
"Yes, sir. Understood. I'm fine now." To emphasize her position, she wiped away a couple of her remaining tears and smiled wider. With a nod from each of them, Chase and Cameron left the room, leaving Hannah and Wilson alone once again.
There was a moment of silence; not quite comfortable, but definitely not awkward. The silence was broken by Hannah. "Can we just start over?"
The break in her voice made her seem all the more vulnerable to him, but she didn't even care as his head shook 'no'. "We both know it's too late for that, Hannah." She understood.
"So, my colorectal cancer?" she asked, trying to distance them from their former subject. Wilson nodded once and started speaking again. He hadn't realized that he hadn't told her it was colorectal. She couldn't help slipping into people's minds sometimes.
