As I approached her, I heard a piercing scream. A shiver went up and down my spine. The water was ice cold and my clothes stuck to my skin which was in the process of turing blue.

I stopped a meter in front of her, while I reassured myself. I knew what to do, I had done this type of rescue countless times in water safety at my local pool.

'Please remain calm' I yelled. 'I am going to rescue you'.

I took off my top and I had my swimming togs underneath. I was shivering to the bone.

'Turn around and stop splashing' I ordered regaining my sight. She did as I asked.

'Hold out your right arm' I bellowed. This was going to be tricky. This was unlike the many times I had practiced in water safety because there was a baby in the mothers arms.

She held the baby to her chest with her left arm. I threw her my long-sleeved top and it splashed her face.

'Grab the sleeve' I demanded.

'Ok' she spluttered choking on water.

I towed her in while she lay on her back with her baby lying on her stomach. I was proud but it definitely wasn't over yet!
