The next day, I woke early to find an empty room aside from myself. I was instantly confused as to where Shane was, but while I was stretching my hands hit a small piece of paper. I reached out and unfolded it, smiling when I saw Shane's slanted writing. Sorry baby girl, but I had to go to school today. I'll pick up your work on my way out this afternoon. Text me if you want anything from your house, I'll get it before I head to see you. Have an excellent day and please rest. -Shane. Grinning to myself, I pressed the nurse's button and reached for the cup of water left by my bedside.
I heard the click of the door and a new nurse entered. "Good morning, Victoria. I'm your new nurse for the day. How are you feeling?" "Fine, I'm sore though and I have a slight head ache." She hummed a response, "Ok, that's normal. We'll get you so pain medications and we're going to remove your catheter this morning. Would you like some breakfast?" I eagerly nodded, but stopped when my head began to pulse. "Keep calm, hun. Let me go get your meds and put in an order for your breakfast. When I get back I'll take out that catheter and we'll switch you to your new room." She left without a response from me, so I layed back down and shut my eyes to ease my throbbing head.
Within ten minutes the nurse was back and administering pain medications through my IV. "Okay Victoria, I'm going to remove your catheter. It should only be a little uncomfortable, ok?" I swallowed my fear and nodded. As quick as could be, the removal was done and I was able to relax again. "Ok Victoria, I'm going to grab the wheel chair and we'll wheel you down to your new room." After a slight struggle, I was in the wheel chair and we were headed to a different floor. Katie wheeled me into a new room, that was fortunately, another private room. She helped me into the bed and adjusted it to help me get comfortable. "Okay hun, someone will bring your breakfast up soon. Press the call button if you need something, sweetie!" "I sure will." She smiled and danced off. That girl is too peppy for nine in the morning. I could feel the meds kicking in so I leaned my head down and clicked on a quiet TV channel.
I had watched about an hour of TV and eaten breakfast when I heard my phone beep, signaling that I had a new message. I pulled the phone towards me and viewed the text that just popped up. It was my mom telling me she'd be up in about half an hour. I texted back an "Ok" and my new room number, and then I sent a text to Shane, informing him of my new room number. I went back to my inbox to view my other unopened messages. I had ten messages in my inbox, four from Casey, two from my friend Chelsea, and an extended text message from none other than Liam. I curiously opened the four page text message and began reading. I wanted so badly to see my brother, but as long as Shane was here, I knew better than to expect Liam. The text basically said that he missed me and hoped I got better quickly. I set my phone aside and thought about everything that had happened. My thoughts were beginning to be overwhelming when my mother's figure popped in my doorway.
"Hey sweetie! You look so much better today!" I smiled, "Yeah, I feel a lot better today. Maybe they'll let me out earlier than they thought. I'd kill for some good food and sleeping in my own bed." She laughed and pulled a book from her bag, "I brought you this, figured you'd be bored." I looked at the title and almost squealed in delight, she had brought To Kill a Mockingbird! "Thanks momma, I am getting really bored here." "So, how'd you sleep last night? What time did Shane leave this morning? I know his mom was getting frustrated because he wouldn't go to school." I nearly rolled my eyes at that, "I slept fine and I'm not really sure what time he left, he was gone before I woke up. It doesn't surprise me, that boy has been glued to my side." She chuckled, "He's just in love, that's all. He'd do anything for you, you know."
I gulped, "He's not in love with me, we've barely even started dating." "Oh but he only has eyes for you, has for years now. How did you never notice? He follows you around like a lovesick puppy." "You're seeing things mom, he's always been so rude and controlling before and now he's guilty about the wreck." She made a face and patted my non-broken leg, "okay then, what ever you say dearie." We continued on with mindless chatter for awhile and at about 11:30 Mom looked at the clock and said, "I better head back to the farm honey, I have to fix lunch for your dad. Did you want me to get you some food from the cafeteria before I go?" "No thanks mom, I had a late breakfast so I'm not really hungry, I'll have Shane get me something later when he comes up." She nodded and leaned down for a hug which I gladly returned. "Love you sweet heart, have a good afternoon, me and your dad will probably come up with dinner tonight, okay?" "Sounds great mom, love you too, tell dad and Liam I miss them, please." "I will, get some rest!" She walked out the door and once again I was left to be alone with my thoughts. I glanced at the clock that read 11:39. Sigh, I still had another four hours until Shane would get here. I was feeling sleepy again, so I snuggled into the bed and fell asleep again.
