Pebble ran for her life, her paws frantically scampering across the cold earth. She stumbled in her blind terror as her fear made her run quicker. She sped across the forest, a blur of blue and white. "Faster, faster" she whimpered to herself, but her body wouldn't obey. She couldn't stop thinking about... "No, you cannot remember. You must never remember!" she repeated. But it was no use.
The fox slunk in the den, its yellow eyes gleaming and its teeth baring menacingly. Ash whimpered and started to wail. "Mama, MAMA!" he shouted. Pebble was terrified as the fox slunk closer, Closer, CLOSER, and headed to where Ash was curled up.
Pebble sobbed for someone, anyone, but even her cries could not drown out the sound of her brother screaming with fear and agony.
Then everything went silent. The birds could be heard chirping cruelly from outside. The fox turned its bloody muzzle towards the entrance of the den, where her mother had appeared, frozen.

"No, no, no." Pebble muttered.

Lily stepped into the den, shocked. As she gazed at Ash her expression turned from horror, to grief, to anger, and with a terrible yowl she launched herself at the Fox.

Pebble shook her head with anger.
"Why couldn't she have just taken me and run away?" She thought.

Her mother was strong, but she was exhausted from running so far. The fox was quicker, and gave her a deep wound in her tortoiseshell chest. It was clear that this was fatal.
"Mama!" Pebble shouted. Lily faintly smiled and motioned for her to come closer. "There is a clan of cats not far from a meadow of flowers. If you find them, you will be safe, my love." She meowed.
"But what about you?" Pebble wailed. "How will I survive without you?"
Lily just murmured "Follow the meadow and you will be safe. I will always love you and you shall one day meet me in the stars." The light from her mother's eyes faded, and the fox roughly grabbed her scruff. Fortunately, it paid no attention to Pebble.
She sobbed as the fox dragged her mother's limp body away from the den of brambles and deep into the Forest. The sky darkened with clouds and heavy rain began pouring. The gray-and-white she-cat stumbled out of the den, in shock.

Pebble, now exhausted from hours of frantic running, saw the faint outline of a meadow up ahead. She put on a burst of speed and collapsed in the soft meadow flowers. She lay down on her side and caught her breath. As the rain continuously padded, Pebble gently drifted off to sleep.
