It began just like any other day. I went to my boring classes, hung out with my friends, and got ready for my date with Bryce, okay, maybe I didn't get ready for dates every day, but you get the point. Can I just point out that Bryce was insanely cute. Not to mention funny, sweet, and he didn't even care about looks. He was more interested in what was on the inside. Bryce cared about my soul.
Bryce and I were at a football game when things went really awry. Bryce kept glancing this other girl and licking his lips. I assumed he was being a perv and became very defensive about it. He denied it at first, then I pointed out the girl and he ran off with her . Leaving me sitting there in complete and utter confusion with tears running down my face. At first I just sat there. Then I was I thought to myself, you know what? I'm not going to let him get away with pulling a stunt like this, so I went to go find him.
I turned the corner where I saw them exit the stadium, and I saw Bryce with his tongue down the girl's throat (ew). Me being my idiot self,I marched up and lightly pushed him away from her.
"You know what Bryce?YOU'RE A JERK! I thought that you cared about more than just looks! I guess I was wrong!" I shouted.
He glanced over at the girl, making me even more enraged. "You can't even go three seconds without looking at another girl can you? I honestly thought you cared about more than just appearances."
" Oh, but I do care about more than just outer beauty, Charlotte." He turned to face me , voice dropping into a raspy whisper , "I care about what's on the inside." I glanced over to the girl and saw that her eyes were a milky white, and her skin had a greenish tint to it.
I could feel my body shaking. "What did you do to her?"
"I did to her, exactly what I'm planning to do to you. I killed her."
I was too shocked to form a plan to get out of there alive, so I just went with my first instinct, knee him in the groin. I sprinted down the hall as fast as my legs could Carry me, but he managed to catch up with me. He grabbed me by the legs and hung me upside down from a locker. He crouched down so that we were face-to-face.
"I've always known you have a strong personality, Charlotte." I squirmed at the mention of my name, trying to escape his grasp, but he just tightened his grip. "Now let's see how your soul tastes." He grabbed my jaw and pried my mouth open. I tried to headbutt him, but he was holding my head back.
He opened his mouth and began sucking in air. At first, I felt nothing, then every single ounce of pain I have ever felt washed over me all at once, every bone I have ever broken, every cut or scratch I have ever felt, even every heartbreak. Even more terrifying? I could see a small path of grey smoke leaving my body. I tried to scream, but I could barely even muster a squeal.
Then, a miracle happened. Bryce bursted into a cloud of pink dust, leaving behind a strangely fruity smell. My soul came back into my body, and I felt immediate relief.
Standing over Bryce was my best friend, Love. I know what you're thinking. Isn't Love thousands of years older than you? Well, technically he is, but every time a new form of love is created, he gets reborn in a new body. What is the most recent form of love, you may ask? Well, it's basically just taking friendship to the next level, so you're best friends for life, including the mushy, gushy, love stuff. This form of love is only a couple of years older than me, so Love and I are around the same age.
Love stood over Bryce's body, breathing heavily. "Vaporizers! Man, I hate those guys." He stood in a position where his hands were on his knees, with his bow swung gracefully on his shoulder.
I stood up, still terrified from what had just happened. "Who?" I asked.
Love rolled his eyes, as if I should know already, "Vaporizers. Soul eaters. I hate them."
I took a moment to process that. I wasn't necessarily surprised that there were demons chasing me, being the daughter of Life and Death and all, but I had never heard of vaporizers before.
I looked at Love. At first glance, he looked like any other teenage boy. He had tan skin, hair so black it almost looked blue, and a slight muscular build. But as you got closer, you could see that his eyes were completely clear. His irises looked like white crystals. His eyes were so clear, that if you looked directly into them, you could see your soul, like a mirror to your inner self. He also had an Italian accent, because according to him, that's where love originated. But I totally think that it's fake. I glanced at his outfit and freaked.
"What are you wearing?!" I asked. He looked down at himself, he was wearing skinny jeans and a Guns n Roses t-shirt.
"I don't see the problem here." He replied, smirking.
"That's my shirt!"
He rolled his eyes, "I'll give it back, don't be such a drama queen."
By the way, I never got that shirt back.
"Whatever. Care to explain what those things are and how they came to be? They seem new."
"I already told you, they're Vaporizers. How they came to be, I have no clue. He said he wouldn't tell me until you asked."
I groaned. "Start the car, we're going for a visit." I didn't like the idea at the time, but it's what I needed to do.
