Jack and I sat across from each other in a fancy restaurant filled with colors that would have lifted my spirits, but I barely noticed them, because they were not as important as this urgent information. I didn’t care about pretty scenery or the elegance of this restaurant. Nothing beautiful mattered at the moment.
“Tell me about her.” I said softly. He sighed, frowning.
“Well, you and her both had the same job. She was there before you, though. You weren’t always a cop. . . .Well, you and her hit it off, you both could tell each other everything. In fact, she knew your biggest secrets.”
I nodded, intrigued. I urged him to go on.
“She was given the nickname “Pitch” from your boss. Your boss ended up marrying you later on.”
I stiffened. My husband?
“I married my boss?”
He nodded. His eyes softened. “He loved you with all his heart. He wasn’t really a man of emotions, but you changed that when he first truly saw you.”
I smiled. Well, at least I knew I was happy with my husband.
“Well, anyways, Pitch was a loyal friend. Actually, your boss wanted to. . . .Fire you after messing up on a job, but she fought for you to stay. And you were never informed of this. Every time you were threatened, she would back you up, and you never new. She never told you. There was not a day that your boss didn’t find you two joking around, despite the horrible conditions. You two didn’t have the best job out there, but she always made sure you were safe.”
“How did she die?”
“She saved you.”
I hesitated. “Was The Joker attacking me?”
A flicker of annoyance spread across his face, but as soon as it appeared, it flashed as if masked by a cool new appearance. He seemed like he was a good actor of some sort, like as if he was able to disguise himself easily (No, not referring to Heath Ledger, but Joker is a man who is a very good actor and usually acts during his heists, really depends but that’s what he’s doing, pretending to be a normal man thus going out of character). I could hardly tell his emotions, just the ones he allowed me to see.
“No,” he hesitated. He seemed very reluctant. “He didn’t attack you. Not all the things you’re told are true.”
I was about to question that statement, but he quickly went on before I could.
“You see, I can’t exactly tell you what happened that day. It’s confidential, but you just have to talk to me. Pitch was a good person. And Joker never hurt you.”
“He hurt my husband though, right?”
He shook his head, biting his lip gently, he groaned inwardly. “So what are you ordering?” he looked down at his menu. I suddenly remembered we were at a restaurant and checked my menu.
“Uhm. . . .”I picked something random on the menu. “I’ll get the spaghetti and meat sauce.”
“That sounds good.” he nodded, he ordered Fettuccini Alfredo. While we waited, I stretched and yawned and tried to think of something else to say, but he beat me to it.
“Rough day at work?”
“You have no idea,” I chuckled. “I arrested Catwoman.”
Jack looked up quickly with wide eyes. “Wait what?” he asked quickly.
I was taken back. “Yeah, what’s wrong?”
He turned silent. “Nothing, I just heard that Joker was in jail, but Catwoman is Joker’s ally. It’ll create some stress.” he seemed to be in deep thought.
“So how was your day?” I asked. He grinned.
“Well, it was really fun. I have really stupid co-workers so I spent the whole day giving them trivia questions and watching them stupidly give incorrect answers.”
I raised an eyebrow, chuckling slightly. “Wow, how sweet of you,” I sarcastically stated.
He shrugged. “Their faults, not mine. They didn’t pay attention in school.”
I smiled. “Shame on them, then.”
Our food came and we dug in while joking, as if we were best friends. At the end of the night, he brought me home, but looked at the house with a sort of sorrow overwhelming his handsome face.
“I wish I could spend more time with you,” he whispered sadly.
I felt a great feeling of satisfaction wash over me.
Someone truly wanted to be with me.
I kissed him with all the passion I could muster before going off into my house, walking on cloud nine with new fantasies in my growing mind.
