The Prize Girl Chapter Four
“Romario? Isn’t he the man in the race? What about him?” Brad narrowed his eyes in curiosity. He did know Romario and recognize him as the boss. I mean, who doesn’t think so? Romario always has his own stage and giant bodyguards with him; it is too obvious that he is the boss.
“Nothing.”I denied then looked down at the floor.
Brad looked at me in disbelief then made a statement, “Romario took the money, right?” I dared not to agree or disagree to his statement. The only thing I could do was biting my lips. Brad sighed thoughtfully, “Do you have any problem with Romario? I heard he has the most powerful Hispanic gang in the hood.”
He was correct, but it still couldn’t make me unlock my mouth. We both stayed in silence for a moment. He rose from the corner of my bed. Brad rested his hands on his waist. He glanced at me then looked far. I slowly lifted my face to see Brad’s. His face turned stern as the orange sunlight shone on his clenched jaws. Brad’s gray eyes seemed to shine from the sunlight reflected.
“Well, if you don’t want to talk about it, we better shop because I still wanted lasagna.” He uttered in a sudden.
I felt guilty for the money and to make him left his work just to check on me. He deserved something in return. An explanation about the problem will surely calmed him and made him aware of the condition. Besides, he needed to know what happened to the girl he won and hired.
“My Dad owed money to him.” I started explaining. Brad stopped his way out and closed the door. His attention was back to me as I slowly lifted my face. “The problem is, my Dad passed away last week out of kidney failure. He had been drinking and gambling for the past six years. He borrowed money from lots of people including Romario. Two days ago, Romario came to take his money back. I told him I didn’t have the money because Dad used all of them to gamble.” I held my breath and looked at Brad. His face was serious as he listened attentively, “That’s why he turned me as the prize for his race. Today, I met him in front of the store. He thought I was lying about having no money to pay him as he saw me shopped a lot. His man searched my pocket and found the money. Romario took it all but I managed to run away.”
Brad didn’t make any comment about my explanation. He still looked far thoughtfully. I waited for him to make his decision or opinion. He didn’t even move and I dared not to break the silence. Suddenly, Brad straightened up then slid in his hands to his pockets, “Okay. We better go to the supermarket now. I would help you make the lasagna.”
He stepped out of my room. I watched him went out as I thought about the reason behind his act. I wondered about what’s in his mind, I wondered about what he thought of the situation, I wondered about what he would do. I wondered about Bradley Knight.
The questions did storm me, but I somehow realized that Brad didn’t make any comment to keep my feelings and to let me know that it’s not changing anything.
I smiled then headed off to the living room. Brad was calling someone when I put on my boots, “Yes, Romario Perez.”
He hung up after he said Romario’s full name. I wondered what did he do but stopped myself from asking. Brad was nice enough to me, I better not questioning him and his decision.
