Yawn! Piper rubbed her eyes sleepily as she watched the cheerleading tryouts. She had promised Gianna to keep her company, but Gianna had dropped her like a hot potato the minutes all the girls had arrived and was currently sorting the potential cheerleaders into groups and teaching them the tryout routine.
Sitting on the hard steps to the parade square, Piper lay her head down in her arms and sighed again. This sighing thing was really becoming a bad habit.
"Didn't get much sleep last night?"
Piper jumped slightly at the familiar voice. Turning to the side, she saw Gabe smiling curiously at her as he sat next to her on the steps. Shaking her head slowly, she chuckled to herself. "If only you knew..."
She'd spent the longest time arguing with her friends about her supposed 'crush' the day before. How was she supposed to suddenly like someone she barely knew? Gianna had even called it 'love at first sight', citing her relationship with Luke as reference, but Piper begged to differ. Love itself was unreal enough sometimes. At first sight? You must be kidding.
She couldn't help but wonder about him though, that much she had to admit. It was unexplainable, she just wanted to get to know him better and become his friend. It had gotten to the stage where were she had been unable to fall asleep the previous night. It was ridiculous! Piper felt that she must be going insane...
"If only I knew what?" Gabe asked, snapping her out of her reverie.
"Nothing." Clearing her throat, she appraised him. He was looking pretty good again in a simple polo tee shirt and jeans. Sighing for the trillionth time that day, Piper picked invisible lint off her shirt as she forced herself to look away so as to not embarrass herself. It was really unfair, how some people were born so attractive, leaving average people like her to feel inferior. She wasn't the shallow type - she knew that looks weren't everything. But she couldn't help but wish she were more attractive, if for nothing else, then for the sake of her nonexistent guy situation. Guys were most often only attracted to pretty faces, though she had to admit that most were too afraid of her to get to know her in the first place.
SNAP! Piper was startled by Gabe snapping his fingers in front of her face.
"You zoned out again. You'd rather daydream than talk to me?" Gabe actually looked pretty hurt. Piper knew he was just joking with her again, but just in case he was really going to think that way and leave, she quickly shook her head and blurted, "No!"
A small smile spread across Gabe's face but he quickly wiped it off and turned to watch the cheerleaders, not responding.
Blinking, Piper waited as Gabe remained silent. Why was he keeping quiet?
Impatient, she turned around fully to face him, almost falling off the steps in the process, but he paid her no attention and continued to stare at the cheerleaders, smiling to himself in a strange way. Glancing at the cheerleaders, who were currently doing splits, Piper grimaced. Stupid boys and their stupid hormones.
Seconds ticked past and Piper could feel herself getting more and more irritated at Gabe's silence as she watched him watch the cheerleaders. He even cheered when the senior cheerleaders demonstrated the routine, not even sparing Piper a glance when she cleared her throat. Ass.
"Well?" She asked, finally unable to wait any longer for him to talk.
He ignored her. Ignored her!
"Hell-o?" Dragging out the 'o', Piper tapped her feet impatiently against the ground and brought her knees closer to her.
Still no response. It was like the ass was pretending not to hear her! There was no way he couldn't, they were only half a metre apart.
