Please! Her voice jolted me awake.

Please don't leave me! I don't want this, I can't fight on my own!

I won't forget the promises we exchanged

I close my eyes to affirm it

I will shake off the overwhelming darkness to move forward

Music awoke Alex in a cold sweat, her weak lungs heaving and her mouth dry. She could still smell the smoke. Looking around, the darkness seemed to swallow her tiny body. Home? She thought hopefully as she launched her sleep-deprived body towards the door. With effort, she pulled it open, only to have her heart sink. The endless, boring white corridors seemed to weave a maze in the darkness. "Mom? Dad?" Alex cried out, flames flickered at the edges of her vision. "Eva?!" She cried out, the tears in her eyes blurred her vision, as she stumbled, desperate to escape the invisible fire.

"Nurse! She's up again!" a voice called out, panicked, Alex snapped out of her trace. Unaware of what was happening, she paused, looking around, then, seeing the nurses, she ran away from the ladies dressed in lab coats that flew behind them, ignoring the pain that came from both of her legs, Alex desperately dodged dark objects that were in her way. When it felt like her legs would give in, she ran into a small room not too far from her dark prison, she sighed as the sound of heels clicking on the hard tile faded into the background. With the terror over, Alex looked around her surroundings. It was dark, like everything else in this place, but there was a rather large bed next to a window.

Curious, Alex edged closer, tripping a few times. Inside the bed, nestled into the covers was a small boy around her age. He looked sick, and the heart monitor next to him confirmed Alex's diagnosis. She looked over to the bed stand, on it, was the most peculiar object Alex had ever seen. She reached over and ran her small hands around the thick, round edges of the boy's glasses. Interested, she foolishly put them on, leading across the sleeping boy who moved ever so slightly. Startled, Alex lost her balance and smash into the unforgiving ground below.

"Ow!" she squeaked, gathering her wits and picking up the now cracked glasses.

"Here she is!" One of the nurse's voices rang out. Alex looked up, but was blinded but the lights suddenly turning on. "Hey!" she yelled in protest as they picked her up.

"Come on then, time for you to go to bed." The lady in white soothed.

"But Eva!" Alex protested as her captive carried her to her room.

"It's ok, I promise" the nurse sighed, Alex huffed. "Yeah right. Only mom and dad can help her!"

The nurse sighed again, this one more drawn out as she touched her face. "Look, kid. Your sister is fine." With that she bid 'good night', marched towards the light and closed the door, locking Alex in her prison of darkness. "No, she's not."

Just outside the door, the nurse meet up with Doctor Wanker. "still here?" the nurse nodded. He sighed, and looked at her door, lost in thought. "Her sister might be better off without her." he sighed, and rubbed his face. "you know, we were in the middle or surgery when the little one came in and flipped?" he sighed again as the nurse rubbed his back. "almost cost us the whole operation."

The nurse sadly nodded, looking at the door. "she's just trying to keep her sister safe, sir. she cares."

"I know, I know. I just wish she wasn't so... annoying."
