Looking out at the snowy, misty scenery in front of me I sat back shakily as yet another hour passed. My bum was becoming numb as I sat on my window seat; but I didn't care. I hugged my jumper closer to my body, realising that I'd forgotten to turn the heater on yet again. I tore my gaze away from the foggy window as there was a knock on my old, wooden door. I ignored it and just readjusted my socks, looking back out at the dark street below.
"Eve where have you been?" a small voice spoke out as the door was opened.
I didn't answer as I couldn't find my voice, and even if I could, what was the point in speaking? I kept my eyes on the street, watching as a young girl skipped across the road with her father trailing behind her. I smiled softly as she scooped up some snow from the ground and threw it at him. I watched their interaction as he laughed and picked her up, throwing her over his shoulder. Their laughter could be heard loudly in the murky dusk.
I gulped sharply as I felt a gentle hand on my shoulder. Turning my head slowly, I saw Iris' face come into view. She looked down at me curiously and sat across from me on the window seat.
"What's wrong?" she mumbled, as she crossed her legs.
I licked my lips, hoping to find my voice hidden beneath all the pain. Taking a deep breath and opening my mouth, I was only able to release those two words that caused me to break down into tears yet again.
"He's gone"
Laying my heavy head onto her shoulder, I could feel Iris' arms wrap around my gaunt waist. I squeezed my eyes closed as all the memories came rushing back; it was like they were pushing against my skull and trying to get out. I pushed those memories back into the pit of my mind, suddenly becoming quite desolate and forlorn. As I looked over Iris' shoulder cautiously something familiar crossed my vision; it was the young girl. But this time when I saw her face she looked quite perplexed.
Continuing to look at her, I pulled away from Iris' warm embrace and noticed the little girl looking up at me. Her striking green eyes stared back into my pale brown ones. As I kept staring into her eyes, getting lost in them I could feel my shoulder get pushed slightly.
"Eve you need to tell me why he left! Where'd he go?" I heard Iris snap behind me.
She'd gotten up from my window seat and had taken her position of standing in my cold, dark living room. I hesitantly looked up at her, my eyes losing all the feeling they once held. I turned my stiff, aching body to face hers and I parted my dry lips slightly.
"If I knew where he went then I would've pursued him." The words left my mouth very icily.
I hadn't intended my voice to sound like that though. I had no control over my legs as I stood up slowly, joining Iris at her towering height. Slowly and stiffly, I extended my arm toward the door.
"Now if you'll excuse me, I have some things to do." I mumbled quietly, politely asking her to leave.
Iris took her bottom lip in between her two, white top teeth. I studied her facial expression; knowing that I'd pissed her off.
"Fine, I'll leave. But I have one thing to say to you first. I've been here, for six years. I have never left your side and you know that sometimes it got too hard for me, but I stayed with you because I knew that you needed me. But then when Garrett came along, you forgot about me. You spent all your time with him and you probably even had a better connection with him too. I can't believe that I was jealous of him! What is wrong with me? I've had enough of you Eve! As soon as I walk out this door I won't be coming back!" She shouted vehemently.
