SETH POV

"That redheaded girl is pretty hot." I said to my friend Hector once I'd landed on the other side of the courtyard. Hector has light brown hair and silver and teal wings. Necromancer wings are often dark gray or metallic. I was a rare type with raven-black wings

"Yeah, she looks new." Hector shrugged. "Not too many new students around here. Maybe she'll be a Power."

"Yeah. Wonder if she can take it." I winked at him. "She could just end up a Crappy Virtue with basic elemental powers."

Hector shrugged. "Maybe she'll be a Power. She definitely doesn't look like a necro to me. But stop distracting me, Seth; you're just talking about other things to avoid telling me about last night."

Last night. I had just reported to Alistair that there was, indeed, demon activity in the human city. I hadn't told him about how I'd actually fought the demon; I didn't need to be scolded or punished for taking on a demon by myself. But I could definitely brag to Hector. "I fought the demon."

"Woah, you fought the demon? And won?" And you weren't hurt! Unless you found a Healing demi-angel before you came back..."

"No, I won! I summoned a Shade to whisk him back to the Dark World."

Hector blinked. "Why didn't you kill him?"

I shrugged. "It wasn't worth it. I cut him up good." I smirked at the look of shock and admiration on his face. "We have to go. I'll tell you more later."

"You've got to be kidding me! A fight with a demon, and you're leaving me hanging! Well, you're right." He said, glancing at the ornate clock tower.  We do have to go. Remember, we're going to help Alistair tech the fledglings about necromancy."

I snorted. "Can you believe we once sat in that class learning about ghost classifications? The difference between a Class 1 Mild Wraith and a Class 2 Mild Ethereal?"

"Rank 4 Shades and Solitary Apparitions?" Hector laughed. "Well, maybe that's why he wanted our help, because we're his best students."

"You mean I'm his best student. I'm a better necromancer than you are."

"Shut up Seth. Let's go teach some fledglings."

Our much loved instructor, Lord Alistair Skyspire, met us in the classroom. Alistair has a dark face, and long wings that are tawny gold on top and dark grey underneath. Most of my teachers hate me, but I've learned the hard way not to mess with Alistair. Alistair is my mentor; I have to stay on his good side. He glared at us with his striking blue eyes.

"You're late, boys. You always dawdle; I should never expect you two to be on time. We have eight fledglings to teach today."

"Eight. Wow, eight fledglings find necromancy as their field all at once! Now that's impressive."

Alistair sighed. "Ravenshade, you start listing the different types of ghosts on the board. Nighthex, you list the different Ranks and Classes."
