Loading the cattle was quiet a chore.  Each one was fairly young and strong. Several men were trying to force them through the shoot and into the trailer.

“YUP!” I screamed and smacked my hand by the fence. I was standing on the side of the fence the men didn’t want me in there and personally I really didn’t want in there either. Before I would haven’t cared about getting trampled or kicked by one of the heifers or the bull, but now something stopped me. It was as if I actually wanted my life to continue now, before all I wanted to do was end my life.

      “Boo!”

Jumping up and yelping I turned around to see Jonathan grinning down at me. “Jerk!” I screamed and smacked him on the arm.

“Ouch! What was that for?” He grinned as he rubbed his arm with a grin that he so desperately tried to hide.

“For being a jerk,” I mumbled trying not to laugh at his expression.

“How is it being a jerk when I just wanted to scare the cattle into the trailer?”

“You weren’t trying to scare the cattle in the trailer you were trying to scare me!”

“Yeah well either way you look at it. It both worked.”

“What do you mean?” How badly I wanted him to be wrong, but once again I was the one who looked like an idiot for arguing like a child.

      “Turn around.” He grinned smugly.

Turning around I saw that the men were slamming the gate shut to the trailer and each of the new heifers and the one bull were snug in the trailer. I looked down at the water I had placed on the ground it now had a dead fly floating on the top and dirt settled in it from all the sand the cows stirred up. Reaching down I picked up the water and started to bring it to my lips to drink out of it.

“You’re not really going to drink that are you?” Jonathan asked right before the cup touched my lips.

“No, but you are!” With that I poured it all down the front of his shirt and took off running and hopped into the back seat of the truck.  Jonathan chased me to the truck.  I knew he went slowly for me. I mean what would he have done if he would have caught me?  A smile was stuck permently on my face from the thought of what Jonathan and his mischievous mind could actually do.

Leaping into the truck I slammed the door shut and pushed down on the door lock right as he reached for the door handle.  My life came from my heart, stomach, and soul. It felt so good that I didn’t want to stop. His face was priceless. I knew he was acting like he had been defeated but he really had won.  I didn’t realize that he had won until Mr. Cummings unlocked the truck and Jonathan sat on the other side of me on the way home.

Jonathan gave me his handsome mischievous grin and I kept my eyes wide open and fully alert on the way home. There was no way that I was going to trust him enough to fall asleep beside him.
