On The Way

I grabbed some money for lunch and put it in a little pouch in my bookbag. Then I slipped my jacket and boots on and was about to head out the door. " See you after school mom and dad. Love you. Bye!" And with that I pushed the door open with a small creek and slid out, starting to walk to school.

As I walk through the boy's yard to get to my usual route I hear the slight sound of the door opening. Oh please don't be the boy. Let it be the mom or dad I thought silently. But sure enough, it was the boy. He caught up to me and started walking beside me. I accidently let out an annoyed sigh a little too loud. If he heard it, I won't know because when it happened, he didn't say anything.

"Hey" he said finally. "Uh, hi" I replied. "On your way to school?" he asks, obviously not remembering or caring about when he caught me right when I was getting ready for school. "Yeah. What about you?" "Same" he answers.

"What school do you go to?" I ask him, hoping that its not mine. "Alexis Academy" he replies as he kicks the soil beneath his feet. Crap! I knew it. I knew it. I knew it! I knew that with my luck it just had to be my school. "Oh I see" I reply. I know it was a stupid reply, but I couldn't think of anything else to say. "What about you?" He asks curiously. "Alexis Academy" I answer, trying not to sound disappointed. "Oh. Well I'll see you there."

"Where are you from?" I ask, totally changing the subject on purpose. I hate small talk. "Spain" he replies boredly.

The answer hits me so hard it feels like someone punched me in the nose. Did he say he was from Spain? It must have been really interesting there with all the different colors and foods and stuff. "Why'd you move here?" I ask, trying to figure out what makes the U.S better than Spain.

"My brother moved here a couple of years ago with his girlfriend, but then he broke his right leg a few weeks ago. His girlfriend says that it's too hard to take care of him by herself, so we have to move here for a year or something, and treat him until he's better."

"Oh, well I hope he heals quickly" I say since, again, I couldn't think of anything to say.

It felt like the walk to school went on forever. I suddenly see the corner of Alexis Academy and get really nervous. I am dreading today at school. What's going to happen when everyone sees the new student? I wonder what classes he will take and if he is the Bad Boy, or if he's actually someone different...
