Today was one of those days. You know the days when the sun is shining bright, its beautiful rays seeping through your windows and peacefully laying on your face, and yet there is still a cool breeze wafting about, making the air the perfect temperature? The days when the slight hum of the cars on the highway lull you into a trance and the singing of the birds soothe your ears?
And then you wake up and get ready and take one step out of the house and the sun has disappeared, the singing has gotten louder, louder to the point where it was splitting your head apart and you're choking from the car fumes. You know, the days when you wake up thinking it's going to be a wonderful day but then it turns into a sodding nightmare? Yeah, today was one of those days for Luka Gray.
"Unbelievable! You've only been working here for a week and you've already managed to break almost all of our plates, gotten multiple wrong orders, spilled food all over customers and flirted with everyone who has walked through those doors. I have never in my life met someone so incompetent!" the short and slightly rounded man screamed, smoke practically seeping out of his ears.
Luka sighed, placing a hand on his hip.
"To be fair, I think I did the customers a favor. Your food is appalling! I saved them from possible death so I think a little food on their shirt is completely acceptable," he said innocently, bringing his other hand up to stare at his manicured nails in fascination.
When no words came from the other man, he peeked at him furtively through his long dark eyelashes. The sight had him unable to resist a giggle.
His boss's face had turned an interesting shade of red and he seemed to be taking short, erratic breaths.
"Are you okay, sir?" Luka asked cheekily, a small smile dancing on his lips.
"OUT! GET. OUT! AND DON'T EVER COME BACK!" he burst out angrily, unable to take it any longer as he pointed a stubby finger towards the entrance.
"Alright...but...are you sure you don't need medical attention?" Luka asked in a teasing tone.
He couldn't hold the giggles in any longer and started full on laughing when his ex boss grabbed the first thing he could reach; ironically a brand new plate, and hurled it at Luka. Peals of laughter still streaming from his lips, he dashed out of the staff's room and right out through the entrance of the small bistro, the bell signaling his exit.
Once he was safely away from the fuming man, he smiled and took in a deep breath. Reveling in the different scents and familiar sounds of the usual mid morning in New York City, he felt calmness wash over his body. It was only morning but the sun was missing and the looming dark clouds in the sky covered the land in darkness instead of the brightness it was supposed to. With that knowledge in mind, Luka started humming a cheerful tune as he started the short stroll to the subway, hoping to get back before the inevitable downpour.
Luka wasn't terribly upset about being fired, in fact it was a common occurance. He knew he wasn't very good at many things but it was okay, he was going to make it big one day and when he did, he wouldn't want anyone to know that he worked in such a small time bistro anyway. None of the customers were hot so it wasn't a huge loss that he was fired so quickly.
Mulling over the numerous possibilities of other jobs he could apply for, he barely noticed as he got onto the packed subway, squashed between the crowd. And he barely noticed either when the train stopped at his stop. He only came back to reality when a large body bumped into him, rudely snapping him out of his thoughts and when he looked up to glare at the burly man, he noticed where he was out of the corner of his eyes. Eyes widening in panic, he shoved forward and barely manged to jump through the closing doors. Thanking his small physique, he brushed the non existent dust off the uniform from the bistro that he was still wearing. He didn't have time to change as the boss was too angry to let him. He made a small mental note to burn it when he got back.
