I woke up and looked around. I remembered that I only had one working eye. I grounded and looked around for Callie.
"Yes THANK GOD you are awake I've been so bored and I've been siting here waiting for you to start talk-" she stopped when she noticed my look.
"Oh I'm doing that thing where I talk to fast aren't I," she gave a sorry smile and laid down next to me.
"So... Wanna go to my tree?" I asked.
"Are you kidding me yes!" Callie jumped up and ran out her window down the tree connecting.
Wow. She's so awesome. I thought and could not stop grinning as I followed her.
* * *
"Wow. Did u do some cleaning up around here?" Callie asked as she looked at the freshly cut branches and the newly places rug, pictured with an owl and three owlets. " is that Murphy?"
"Yep! I made it myself," I looked at it with pride.
"Your awesome," she smiled again.
"Uh... Thanks," I blushed once more, " I don't mean to be, uh, to direct, but, uh, wh-"
"Why do I like you?" Callie finished my sentence," well, your not trying to be cool, and your really smart, and your cute in your own way."
This really got me blushing. And sweating. I sat up and looked at her.
"You actually think I, Theodore Burke Oliver, is cute?" I stumbled.
Then. She did something incredible. She leaned over and kissed me right on the cheek. I stared as her warm lips touched my cheek with the gentlest touch.
"Well, did that show that I like you?" She laughed at my dumbfounded face.
I sat there and could not stop smiling. I could feel myself burning up and I pushed my glasses up my nose cause my sweat was slipping them off.
Someone actually likes me! I thought happily.
"Oh!" I gasped, remembering the letter.
"What!" Callie looked excited. I explained how I got a mysterious letter at my door step, " well stop torturing me and read it!"
I pulled out the card from my pocket and ripped it open anxiously. Callie leaned in so she could read the bold letters.Dear Theodore Oliver:
I have been watching you closely for the past year. I have noticed that you have a extraordinary love for owls. I, in fact am a owl myself. I would like you to come to my meadow tomorrow at 10:45 p.m exactly. You may bring that girl of yours. Head to the biggest tree in the forest then open the door and you will see it is enchanted to bring you to me.
Tootles,
Sir Franklin Alcott
"Holy Babushka," Callie said breathlessly.
"Mother of lava," I said with an open mouth.
"That...is...so...COOL!" Callie jumped and she almost fell of the tree, almost knocking me off as well.
"How can we know it's true! Big Mouth Brady could be playing a trick on us."
She had a 'seriously' face on and replied, " are you kidding me. I don't think Brady knows what the word extraordinary means and I don't think he even knows how to wright in the first place. We can't turn down this opportunity!"
"True," I took the card from her and examined it for flaws, but I only found a piece of feather, " are you sure this is a good idea?"
"Have I ever been wrong?"
I nodded.
"okay I've been wrong but come ON we are going. And if your not, I will. But we have to wait a FULL DAY."
"Fine I'll go. And please don't rush through the day."
"You know I will you cant stop that."
"Very well," I knew I couldn't convince her.
"I'm going to sleep early, night!" Callie jumped down and ran toward her house. I knew I should go to bed, and I would try, it's just I knew I wouldn't be able to will a full mind.
* * *The next school day went by unsurprisingly slow. But me and Callie were happy to find out that Brady had gotten suspended for 3 whole day! The whole day, however, was full of anxiety, for me and Callie could not wait for 10:45 to arrive. When the bell rang, for the first time ever, I scribbled down my notes without color coating them. We then ran the whole mile from school to get to our houses, me having to wait several times for Callie to catch up. We quickly guessed on our homework, well, I didn't but Callie did, and I ran home to get dressed. At 9:45, I met Callie at the base of our tree to start the search for the biggest tree.
"Wow, your fancy. A suit and tie and everything," she was talking about my finest black and white suit with a bright blue bow tie. I also combed back my blackish-brownish hair so it wouldn't be in my face so much, " I'm just in leggings and a sweat shirt. But I did do my hair," she beckoned to her long dirty blonde hair.
And oh how I noticed her hair. I noticed the darker parts and the lighter parts, all pulled back into a long, silky side braid. She even completed the look with a purple and yellow flower tucked behind her right ear.
"You look... Um... "I couldn't spit out the words. Extremely beautiful and pretty? Soft and calm and huggable?
"Thank you, you look very nice as well," she smiled. Oh how I loved her smile, " so shall we start looking for the..." She giggled as she saw me staring at her eyes and hair, "Theo, stop staring and help me find the tree," she said, making me sweat. A lot.
"I know where it is," I blurted out," it's that way," I pointed south but didn't move. I couldn't. She giggled again and I watched her hair swing to and fro, her eyes twinkling in the moon light. I urged to start walking but I was frozen. Then, Callie softly grabbed my hand and gently tugged me on. I made my dumb smile and and started to trot along, still grasping her warm, soft hand.
* * *When we reached the tree, Callie could easily notice how I found it. It's base was over 1 1/2 yards wide, it was an enormous oak. We searched around for a door or anything, but found no trace of one. Finally, I found a line or difference in texture in the bark, and got help from Callie to open it. We looked in to expect a beautiful, green meadow, but all we saw was a dirty nest and twigs.
"This is a joke," Callie said and started to turn away.
"Wait, he said it was enchanted. Maybe we need to sit in the nest and it will transport us," I body through the hole, I barely made it through.
Good thing I'm small. I thought as I watched Callie do the same.
Then all of a sudden, the world went black.
* * *At first, I thought Brady had knocked me out again, came back for revenge, but when I opened my eyes, to see what was going on, I just saw Callie standing outside the tree, and she nudged me to come out and look at what she was staring at.
I stopped and glanced and Callie. I slowly turned around and was amazed to see...
A giant owl.
