Alone, in the dark, and scared out of my mind.
What happens if he finds me here? What happens if he kills Anne and her beautiful children?
Fear fills my gut with worry and twists it with regret. "I've made a huge mistake." I mutter to myself in a hushed tone.
A creak comes from down the hall and I nearly shit my pants. A small figure walks through the hallway. I sit up and rub my eyes.
"Jennifer? Wh- what are you doing up? It's late, you should be asleep." My eyes adjust to the girl walking towards me.
She walks up and sits next to me, leaning her head on my shoulder. "I can't... I had a nightmare..."
I feel her small body tremble and I feel sympathetic towards her. I wrap an arm around her and pull her close. "I'm sorry... Why didn't you get your mother?"
"I tried," the girl shivers. "But she wouldn't wake up."
"Did you shake her?"
She nods, "her snores are too loud." She giggles slightly and snuggles closer. "Is it okay if I sleep out here with you?"
I think for a moment before replying, "of course you can."
Within a short few minutes, she was fast asleep in my arms.
Author's note-
I'm aware that this chapter is really short. The main idea of this part was that Jennifer looked for Zach for comfort when her mother was deeply asleep. No only is this a sweet little thing for Zach to experience, but he realizes that he's the only father figure that the little girl looks up to.
