The next Monday turned out to be so tense, I was surprised I hadn't collapsed from the exhaustion of keeping up a moderately normal conversation.
To put things into perspective, Ian had spent the night at Logan's because they needed to, and I quote, "figure out their guy stuff". Yeah, I don't know either.
As for me, Emma spent a good hour sniffling on the phone, which was my indication to buy ice cream and head over to her house. We ended up rewatching the Office about three times, and every time Jim and Pam came on screen, we had to hold each other. It was a bittersweet moment, but we bonded over our hatred of relationships.
God knows why I was trying to create one with Josh, which, unfortunately, I hadn't forgotten about.
"So, um, did you guys study for today's AP test?" I asked uncomfortably, pleading Ian to help me. He was standing in between Emma and Logan. Emma just had her resting bitch face on, while Logan completely avoided eye contact with all of us and stared at the sky.
Needless to say, it was one of the most awkward experiences I'd been through, and let me tell you when I've been through a lot of awkwardness. I just radiate it and it comes to me naturally.
From what I gathered, there was some confusion, where Logan pretty much friend-zoned Emma. And I'm not talking the polite way, I'm talking the, "I think of you as a sister" way. Yeah, it's that bad.
Ian and I philosophized about this for centuries...well, more like the two minutes before they arrived and we had to shut up. For the longest time, we truly believed Logan had something for Emma. He had to. Right? I mean, they had so much chemistry it seemed like the only plausible reason.
And then he just went ahead and broke Emma's heart. That's the sticky thing with having best friends in a fight. There's always an issue of sides.
"What AP test?" Ian asked feebly, probably trying to prompt Emma's inner nerd to come out and have a peek. She didn't take the bait though; she just kept glaring past me as if trying to smite whoever it was behind me.
"Um, World History? Napoleon, anyone?"
Okay, this was so not working. I didn't want to deal with complete silence, so Ian and I both mutually agreed we needed to have them hash it out. I mean, they kind of did, but this was so not helping. Could they at least be on speaking terms?
We pushed them together until they bumped into each other.
Logan chuckled nervously. "Oh, wow, didn't see you there. Uh...um, how, uh, are you?"
Didn't see you there? That was the worst transition in the history of horrible transitions. I almost wanted to bang his head on the wall.
Emma turned around, sighing. I could see, however, that when she looked at Logan - really looked at him, and how utterly terrified he was - things would be okay. Emma's not a grudge-holding one. And even if Logan was a bit of a douche, she still liked him. Which counts for something.
"I'm fine. Look, let's just - let's just forget that ever happened. We're back to normal. We have completely platonic feelings. This is just a regular friendship. Deal?" Her smile was tight and her eyes showed no real joy, but she forced one out anyway. I felt a hard pang in my heart.
It's not fair, is what I wanted to scream at the universe. That my two best friends couldn't end up with a goddamn happy ending when they deserved it most.
Logan's face fell a little, but he quickly covered it up, taking her hand with a lopsided grin.
"Oh, thank god," Ian said, breaking me out of my thoughts. "I thought that was never going to end. Now, I need your advice on something. Today's the last day to switch out of classes, and I'm actually failing statistics. Like, no joke, yesterday, I got a thirty on my test. A thirty! Fucking how?"
