It all started when they died. Everything was great. Well, except my past. but you'll learn about that later. Anyway, It was kinda quite at the house. Quite lonely actually. My grandparents had just walked out the door. Leaving my twin and I to look after the house. Told us to take our showers get ready for bed since it was coming up on 9:00, our bed time. I've never really gave much thought to why we always had to go to bed at nine. You know, I never did see them walk through that door again. I was about half way up the stairs. I was on the eight step to be exact. You never can really forget a detail like that. Anyway I was on the eight step when I got the call. The call that would change my life forever.
The phone rang. I was expecting it to be my grandparents calling to tell us they were coming home because grandma forgot her glasses or because pop forgot to grab his house keys. I dismissed it and continued up the steps. The phone rang and rang. Until I heard a voice say" I am sorry to inform you but you need to come to Uniby Hospital immediately. There will be a car in front of your house in a few minutes."
Confused, I walked down the steps to the bathroom down the hall to get my sister Rose. I knocked on the door. I heard the water turn off and was suddenly engulfed in a cloud of steam. "What?" she said, looking at me as if I had two heads. I said that we had gotten a call and we need to go to the hospital immediately. Her look of anger turned into a look of confusion. "about what?" she asked.
I told her that I didn't know what it was about and that she just needed to get dressed. I turned to walk away when I felt her hand on my shoulder. "Who's it about?".
"I don't know." I stated simply.
"oh" is all she said before closing the door to get changed. A few minutes later she came out just as I heard a honk outside signalling that the car was here. Our dog Brutus looked up at me. He was just as confused as I was. "It'll be alright" I told him, patting his head as I walked out the door. But little did I know It wasn't. It never was okay again.
After a long silent car ride we finally reached our destination. The man who had picked us up told us to wait in the car. We did. We waited and waited for what seemed like hours and kept exchanging looks of confusion to one another, I was just about to reach for the door handle to go see what was happening when the man came back. He told us to follow him. We walked into the hospital building. It was a typical hospital. With green walls, bright lights, nurses and doctors everywhere.
Finally, we arrived at what appeared to be a waiting room. He told us to sit in the chairs and that someone would come for us. Confused, we sat in the ugly lime green chairs. I looked around. To the right of us their was a man. He looked to be in his late thirty's and had a look of sorrow on his face. On the left, a desk with a nurse sat behind it, typing away. Soon after I had gotten a good look at my surroundings, a doctor approached us. He wore green scrubs. God what was with these people and the color green? He brought us to a room where he had us sit down in these plastic orange chairs. (Didn't these people know what color schemes where?)
He said that his name was Dr. Brian. " I don't know how to say this, but your grandparents were in a car accident...and we did the best we could but.... they didn't make it."
A look of shock swept across my face. "What?" My sister said. " You have to be kidding. This is some kind of joke right? Tell me this is a joke."
"We know this is a lot to take in at one time but-"
"WELL YEAH ITS A LOT TO TAKE IN MY GRANDPARENTS JUST DIED AND DON'T START WITH THAT DOCTOR BULLSHIT TALK. YOU ARE'NT SORRY AT ALL, YOUR JUST TOLD TO SAY THAT TO MAKE US FEEL BETTER. AND FOR THE RECORD IT DOES'NT HELP!!!" She stood up from her chair and started to pace back and forth and back and forth."This is a mistake, let me look at the bodies and then I will decide if it is them or not."
"Miss I am not allowed to permit-"
"THERE ARE A LOT OF OLD PEOPLE IN THIS TOWN DOCTOR, YOU COULD BE MISTAKEN!!! ALL OLD PEOPLE PROBABLY LOOK THE SAME THEY ALL ARE WRINKLY AND SAGGY BUT MY GRANDPARENTS WERE NOT SO DON'T PATRONIZE ME DOC!!!"
"Miss if you could just-"
"NO. DON'T TELL ME TO CALM DOWN I HAVE EVERY GODDAMN REASON TO BE UPSET GODDAMMIT."
"Pipe down will you Rose? Your causing a disturbance and yes you have every right to be upset." I said trying to comfort her. She started to weep and crumbled into my arms.I started to stroke her back with my hand, whispering soothing words to try and help. "Would you give us a moment doc?" I said ushering the doctor out of the room.
"What are we gonna do sis?"
"I don't know yet but we can get through it together, just like we have done all these years. Chin up Rose, It will all be over soon."
