The Sacrifice

“No..No..NOO! This can not be happening. Dad, please tell me this is a joke. I am only 17! For the love of God!! I can not get married. I CAN NOT GET MARRIED!”

“Sarah STOP yelling, calm down!” dad commanded

“Calm, CALM, you are asking me to be CALM!. How can you!!!!” I screamed on the top of my lungs.

I ran my hands through my hair, with frustration. This could not be happening to me. PLEASE GOD, this could not be happening to me…

I am too young to get married, I havn’t had the chance to live my life and now my parents expect me to…they expect me to get married to a stranger. I closed my eyes tightly, hoping, wishing, praying that this was a dream.

Much to my dismay, when I opened my eyes, I saw my mum’s teary face holding onto my father like her life depended on him. And my dad, he looked so torn and tired like the entire worlds’ burden was on his shoulders.

‘Sarah, darling, please listen to your dad’ my mum silently begged with her sad blue eyes.

‘Dad, I want nothing but the truth from you’ I demanded sternly.

‘Of course sweetheart, I promise no more lies’ dad replied softly

My dad gestured me to take a seat. So, I slumped onto the couch, impatiently waiting to hear the truth.

Dad sighed deeply; Sarah, before you or Gabriella were born, your mother and I faced a lot of financial problems. Everyday was a struggle to survive we begged on the streets, we even digged through peoples bins to find some food to eat. Life was hell, it was becoming worse then hell.

I looked up at dad, in his eyes I could see the pain and struggle he had faced in life, in that one moment dad looked so old and tired.

‘Please dad continue…’

‘One day, your mother fell extremely ill, we were lying on the side of the road and I was running around frantically, begging people to help me. But no one, NO ONE wanted to help the dirty beggar’s on the side of the road. I was giving up hope, I thought your mum was going to leave me’ said dad with a tear rolling down his cheek.

Mum, gently wiped his tear and held onto his hand tighter, giving him the strength to continue.

When I thought all hope was lost, a fithly rich lady stepped out of her stretched limo. She had beautifully long brown hair with piercing sea green eyes, her kind and caring persona was radiating. Her name was Maria, and without a question, she helped us, took your mother to a hospital and paid for all the treatment.

She is the reason why your mother is alive today. Of course everything in this world comes with a price. In return of saving your mothers life, she wanted our first child to marry her son. The shocking thing was, that she had the legal documents ready, which stated that our first child would marry her eldest son. Not only this, she was willing to pay us money to raise the child.

Sarah, my daughter, you have to understand she was offering us money, we would be financially secure, no more begging, no more eating from bins. We would be rich. We would be happy.

‘OK, I understand, that you needed the money, but the contract was for your first child…..but where do I come into the picture? I am adopted. Technically I am not your first child’

‘Patience, Sarah, I am getting there’ dad replied

‘One cold night, we received you on our door step, we were hesitate to take you in, but then we realised that all our problems were solved, we would raise you as our own child and offer you for the arrange marriage. That way we would continue receiving money from Maria, she would get our first child and at the same time we could save our daughter from being forced into the arrange marriage.’

Shocked I looked at my parents, I could not believe this.

No..NO..NO NO NO NO!! Please tell me this is a lie….please mum..dad..tell me your lieing…

Before I knew it I heard a loud sob, not realising that it was coming from me, the sob turned into tears, which were flowing freely down my face.

‘How..how hicuup…hooww…could you?’

You raised me, took me in, for money, not only this, you raised me so you didn’t have to force your own daughter, your own blood into the arranged marriage. You raised me, so Gabby wouldn’t have to be in this arrange marriage. You used me, for your own selfish reasons.

‘Sarah, we are sorry, but you have to understand we wanted to protect our own children’ pleaded dad

‘Your own children, huh? Then what does that make me? After all these years don’t you care about me? Do I mean anything at all to you?’ I cried out loud.

‘I refuse to be a part of this arrange marriage! And you can not force me, I don’t GIVE A FUCK, I DO NOT ACCEPT! YOU ARE NOT MY PARENTS I FUCKING HATE YOU!! YOU have ruined my LIFE!

WACK! My mother slapped me across the face. I looked at her, with a hurt yet shocked expression.

‘You selfish girl!, You were an orphan we, took you in, raised you, you owe us. If you are alive and well today it is because of us. You HAVE to get married. I will not let my Gabby sacrifice her life in this arrange marriage, you will make this sacrifice. Do you hear me? YOU WILL MAKE THIS SACRIFICE!

‘Mum, daddy, whats going on, I heard some yelling. Is everything okay?’ asked Gabby, whilist rubbing her eyes as she had just woken up.

Gabby, my beautiful younger sister gabby, who I loved so much. My true friend, the only person who understood me. She was wearing her elmo pj’s, with her long blonde hair flowing freely and those shinning green eyes, which reflected confusion.

‘SARAH!..your home! I missed you…what took you so long. I was worried!’ Gabby said excitedly.

Gabby ran down the stairs and engulfed Sarah into a hug.

‘Gabby, don’t worry about me I am fine’ replied Sarah with a forced smile.

‘Gabby, baby, its getting late, go to bed, I promise I will be up in 10 mins’ Sarah insisted

‘Okie dokie, I’ll be waiting, please be quick’ Gabby stated cheerfully

Sarah watched as Gabby climbed up the stairs, with a carefree smile on her face, so young and naïve. All this would be snatched away from her life, if Gabby was forced into the marriage.

Sarah, had made her mind up.

I’ll do it. I will make the ultimate sacrifice for my sister, for her happiness, for the wellbeing of my family.

I accept the arrange marriage.
