friday night
I walked next to him, occasionally stumbling across rocks and branches sticking out of the dirt. The moon and stars were bright against the charcoal sky, and reflected off his longish, dark, shaggy hair.
We were walking to our spot in the woods, where we always go on nights where there's time. It looked just like any other part of the woods, but could be easily identified if you knew what to look for; two tall trees that leaned against each other framing the brightest star in the sky.
I knew the path by heart, but was usually distracted by his incredible personality.
His name was Milo.
...
Once we reached our spot, we sat down and leaned against the two trees-close enough where I could lay my head on his shoulder and he could put his arms around me.
"I never want to forget this place." said Milo gazing up at the stars. The lighting was dim but I could still see his face quite well. I loved the way he looked up into the sky at night, as if he were a little boy fascinated by a new toy or television show.
"You won't." I said. "We won't."
I brought myself closer into him. I felt at home, safe as if nothing in the world could hurt me. Milo squeezed me tighter and held me there until I began to doze off.
I was just about asleep when I heard his phone buzz.
"Camari?" I heard him whisper harshly. He slowly pushed me off of him and woke me up fully.
"What was that? What?" I asked dazed and confused.
"I need to go, my mom needs me home." he said. I felt like he should've been more disappointed that he had to leave me there, at least said sorry or something. I didn't argue though, because I knew his mom was probably being threatened by his dad again. His parents fought all the time, though he never talked about it-I just heard it in the background over the phone or when I went over there. I wasn't aloud there, of course, so I had to sneak in when I could.
...
Milo and I stood up and he kissed me hard on the lips. Without saying a word, he turned and began to jog off into the dark woods to return home.
I stood there for a moment, and then started to walk to my own home. My mom didn't care if I got home late, she was usually gone anyways. My dad left us when I was eight.
...
I crawled into bed and tucked the blanket under my feet. I was cold and wanted Milo there so desperately.
After thinking of him for a while, I went to sleep through the night.
