"Meet in the jumping arena in 10 minutes" called Emily, "sounds good" I shouted back and headed into the stables to get Shadow ready. I whistled and saw his head poke over the stable door, " hello gorgeous boy" I said giving him a pat. He had gotten himself filthy while in the trailer so I brushed him until he was gleaming and then went to find my tack. I walked into the tack room and bumped into a girl who was running out the door, arms full with brushes and shampoos. "Oh I'm so sorry" I said bending down to pick up her stuff which was now all over the tack room floor.
I picked up a bottle of shampoo and handed it to her. She snatched it off me and gave me a cold stare " Be careful, that was expensive" she snapped. She grabbed her things and stomped out the door bumping into Emily on the way. "Geez who was that grumpy monster" Emily said rolling her eyes at me, I had to put my hand over my mouth from laughing out loud. "Oh gosh we better hurry up if we want to ride before lunch". We grabbed our tack and rushed to get our horses ready.
I placed my foot in the stirrup and swung my self over the saddle, and started to warm up. I looked over at Emily and Pippin doing perfect figures of eight and flying changes. You could hardly tell that the pair had only been working together for about 3 months! After we each had a quick canter on both reins we set up a small grid. It consisted of a small X with a 1 stride up to a red and white striped vertical then a 3 stride to a brown oxer. "I'll go first" Emily said and rode Pip over the grid perfectly. I pushed Shadow into a nice steady canter and did a circle before turning him towards the exercise.
He popped over the X as if it wasn't even there, shortened his stride and took the vertical perfectly and took a big leap over the oxer clearing it with 1m to spare. "Well done" called Emily, "let's higher them a bit" she jumped off Pip and highered all the jumps. They were a good height, the last one about 1.45. "Nothing we haven't jumped before, eh boy" I whispered to Shadow and rubbed behind his ears. He snorted happily and I felt him relax underneath me.
I looked up to see Emily clear the grid with Pip once again perfectly. "You make it look so easy" I called to Emily, making her blush with pride. "It's not too difficult" she called "just keep your leg on at the last fence in case he drifts a bit to the side". With Emily's advice in my head I focused on keeping Shadow straight and he cleared everything perfectly and did a little playful buck at the end. "Ok I think that's enough for one day" and Emily agreed. We took them back to the stables and settled them for the night before going back to our dorms to get ready for school the next day.
