At first, all she felt was the pain. It began as a low rumble, background noise. It was almost soothing, the way it folded around her like a blanket. It made her mind dull, gave her a place to hide. It throbbed. It hummed. It came in waves, tossing her up, and dragging her under, washing over her, carrying her away from herself, away from everything.
But it was growing, swelling. The rumble turned into a roar. The pain stopped cradling her and began clawing at her. It was like a beast, ripping her apart from the inside, struggling to break free time to the outside world. The darkness nipped at the edge of her mind, offering her peace, a sleep free of pain.
And for a moment, she almost accepted.
Instead she screamed, sending nurses into her room like a spreading wildfire.
She couldn't speak.
"What hurts?"
Her eyes closed. She was fighting for her life, fighting against the pain, against reality. Sleep was pulling at her, promising her death.
The pain was spreading like wildfire. She fought to free herself. She fought until the lead nurse inserted a needle into her arm and then the darkness won and everything went black.
