Why didn't I know?

The old man slowly starts to fade away.

"No!  No!  Don't go away!!  Come back here honey,!" all the old ladies scream simultaneously.

They all dive into the water, searching for the man that was there just a few seconds ago.

"Why are they all going after my grandpa,?" Italy asks.  "That's not right.."

You are so embarrassed about having your grandma show up at the worst times and places and saying the worst possible things.  There is practically smoke coming out of your ears.  Watching your grandma and her crowd slowly tear up your mental well being is becoming to much to bear.  You say bye to everyone and walk back to your house.

Since your granny isn't home yet you snatch a donut or two from the bakery.  Then, head upstairs to your room and fall asleep.

The clamoring voice of your now infamous granny wakes you from your slumber.  "I have some great news!!"

"Oh no."

"What was that?"

"Nothing.  I'll be there in a second."

You stumble out of bed and check the time on your phone.  Out of your not yet focused eyesight you think you see a 12 and a 23.  Or maybe a 123 and a 4567?  What?

Oh.  An unfamiliar number has texted you.  The message says:

Hey!! Did you get your schedule for next quarter yet?!  We should totally see if we have any classes together!!

This person isn't in your contacts so you reply with:

You've got the wrong number.

No more than a second later your phone buzzes.

I don't have the wrong number.  You gave me your phone number a couple days ago.  I'm Poland!  Remember me?!

You vaguely remember talking with someone named Poland at the party.  Did you give him your phone number though?  Whatevs. You head to the living room where your grandma awaits your arrival.

"Who ya texting,?" she asks.

"Somebody I know."

"Who is it?!"

"Didn't you want to tell me something?" You desperately want to change the subject.

"Yes yes yes! Guess who I ran into this morning at the market?"

"That Bahamian pilot you met back in the day?"

"No, someone even better." She waits for you to guess again. "The man who was singing at the beach last night!"

"Wow...that's...great..."

"He sang me another song. It was so good that I hired him to sing in front of the bakery! Business will be booming!"

"You. Did. Wat?" You rub your temples. "I think that's going to bring less customers."

"Oh, nonsense."

Granny cooks up some (favorite breakfast) for you. You thank her, eat the food, and text Poland the rest of the day. At 9:00 you go check the mailbox to see if your schedule has arrived. It has.

1st and 2nd period; language arts and world history

3rd; math

4th; science

5th; art

6th; rm. 203

Most of your classes are the same as last semester. But now you have art and some other mystery class, let's say.

You send your schedule to Poland. He doesn't have any classes with you, and he seems kind of upset about it.

You text Poland a little bit more and then call it a day.

It's definitely a Monday. You can barely open your eyes, you're so tired. You've already slept in way past your alarm, though. You drag your feet down the stairs once you have prepared for school, and stop mid step.

Sprawled out on the ground of the bakery is your grandmas dead body. She isn't moving. She isn't breathing.

Your eyes are starting to water.

Next to you grandma is her purse, and next to the purse are dozens of cards. You curiously pick up one of them.

It is an ID card with the name "Mike Schmidt" inscribed onto it. You pick up another card, this time a credit card. There are a few more ID cards, unfamiliar names, and even more credit cards.

At first you don't believe it. This can't be the truth.

You eventually have to face it.

Your grandma was an identity theif.
