ii. ignorance was bliss
After doing youtube for a couple of months and taking a few college classes on public speaking, Evan assumed that if he was ready to talk in front of millions without stumbling over his words, he could do that with his best friend.
He assumed wrongly.
They were still at the McDonalds, their neon 'twenty four hours, seven days a week' sign still on in their red and yellow glory. Not much glory, but still more than Evan's when he realized that he couldn't say a single word to Jonathan without messing up or stuttering; the shock at seeing him was still stuck in his bones and didn't to want to go away.
He sighed and resorted to staying quiet, eyes closed and breathing even; his mind kept coming in and out of a hazy state and he tried to keep his head clear so that he could finally say something to his best friend without messing up.
Jonathan rested his chin on the palm of his right hand, letting his friend - no, best friend - sit quietly. He cracked a grin as he watched Evan unintentionally take deep breaths and he could hear his brain counting each breath, trying to calm himself; he found it adorable in a sort of way he couldn't understand.
He hummed lightly as his eyes flickered over to the window of their booth, focusing on the cars that held five am drivers. The cars passed by quickly, unknown to them that someone was staring; they drove by without a thought about anyone else, only a destination and maybe a few song lyrics in their mind.
Evan quietly cleared his throat to get the attention on him; maybe he wouldn't mess up so badly this time.
The world seemed to hate him immensely because as soon as Jonathan moved his gaze to Evan's own, he felt his throat go dry. He's suddenly gazing at a pair of bright blue eyes and he can't seem to look away from them; they looked so cheery and mischievious and just Jonathan.
Evan honestly didn't understand why Jonathan was so wary about showing his face.
He groaned as he practically threw his head down into his hands, muttering something about 'how the world hates him' and 'how much he hates the world too'. He felt a warmth creep up his neck, and he was glad that he was so dark-toned because he'd rather not let any of his friends see him blushing (or let Jonathan have something to brag about).
He could hear his best friend's failure at stifling a laugh, and god, it was like a little more proof that he was a reality; he only knew one person who could laugh so maniacally and so naturally.
(Well, one person who could laugh like that and not be considered a serial killer by him.)"You don't have to talk right now, dumbass. Besides, it's like five or six am right now and quiet is pretty nice. Sometimes." Jonathan grinned, pleased at his attempt of comforting him and also insulting him.
Evan rolled his eyes, but still chuckled bringing his cold coffee cup to his mouth and taking a long swig of it; it tasted horrible but he forced it down before clearing his throat again.
"So...why are you...here?"
"Hey, you can speak now, hah!" He watched Jonathan laugh to himself in joy before the guy finally relaxed. "And it's nothing much really. My mom decided to move in with my sister and I came here because I wanted to move here."
There was no way that Evan believed that; he's his best friend and he knows how ridiculous he could be, but this? Reality just sort of shattered for him and he's back in this illusion, wondering if it was all real. It's not going to be real, though, even if he wanted it to be.
They stayed silent and Jonathan could once again hear the cranking going on in Evan's brain, probably racing with thoughts at his news. He thought that his best friend would be happy, but he couldn't decipher that look on his face; it wasn't comforting at all.
"I don't know if I want to stay here, though..." Jonathan added hesitantly.
"Oh."
Shit.
"I'm just so far from Luke y'know? And he's been with me for so long, it's weird to not be within like five miles of him." He quickly said, feeling his stomach writhe in guilt at Evan's reaction.
Evan relaxed slightly, thinking that he had messed up more than he thought; he hoped it wasn't because of how awkward he was being with him. But they were best friends, right? They shouldn't have been awkward with each other; shouldn't they have just talked as if they were online and that this was just all normal?
He suppressed a sigh when a wave of realization overcame him: he wasn't Jonathan's best friend, Luke was. He just heard the guy talk about how they've been friends for so long, he didn't want to stay here in Canada.
With him.
"Yeah, that must be really weird..." Evan said, smiling at Jonathan to show that he wasn't having any deprecating thoughts or anything.
Blue eyes shined brightly at him, believing his lie and he felt his stomach drop. But he kept his smile on and brought the coffee cup to his mouth again only to notice that there was no more left. He sighed, but still gave Jonathan a smile.
"Hey, where are you living in the meantime?" He asked, wondering why his friend hadn't told him or asked to stay with him.
Jonathan grinned like an idiot before letting out his usual laugh. "I'll let you have three guesses, Evan!"
He cocked an eyebrow, but didn't say anything about it; he knew that Jonathan would take the first thing out of his mouth as a guess.
"You're staying at a hotel?"
Jonathan shook his head. "Hotels don't like maniacal people recording at three am apparently. Found that out the hard way." He laughed at the memory.
"Er, you're staying with a different friend?" That kind of hurt to say.
"You're getting pretty close, but why would I stay with some other friend when I have you?"
Evan felt a sort of warthm creep into his stomach and a small smirk graced his features. It was relieving that Jonathan had him as his first choice.
"I don't know anymore. Just tell me, Jonathan."
He hummed and his blue eyes seemed to shine brighter.
"Only because I'm excited: I've been staying with my girlfriend!"
