The following day was unfortunately a Saturday and I was still sick. My parents had a wonderful opportunity to go to the country side; where the air was crisp and clean. I had to stay at home, because of my condition. It wasn’t much of a condition either way; I just had a mild fever and a sore throat. It was a good thing they didn’t know what helped to cause the sore throat.
I gritted my teeth just thinking about what happened. If Jared wanted to give me something to hate him about he did it thoroughly. I sighed and rested my head on the pillow suddenly feeling dizzier. This wasn’t very fun; I rested my hand on my forehead and sighed, no chance of recovery. I wished there was some way I could make my temperature drop, just a little. I squeezed my hand on my forehead and it actually felt cooler. Obviously pain was a way to relieve any other pain, as crazy as it sounds. I released my forehead as a chill washed over me. It wasn’t relaxing; it was too-too cold. I sighed, well; it was more of a tremble. I got up and hugged myself. What is happening to me, I thought miserably.
The doorbell rang twice and I trembled once more before stumbling down the stairs. I opened the door with shaking hands.
“What happened to you?” Madam Lagash’s worried voice rang through me like electricity.
“I-I’m f-freezing,” I sputtered out.
Her eyebrows pulled together as she turned to look outside, she had every right to look at me strange, it was sunny, the first since the week had begun.
“You’re what? I thought you’d be complaining about this heat, not about being cold,” she replied making her way inside.
I hugged myself tighter and shook my head. “I-I don’t know what happened. I just wanted my fever to go down and then I got cooler, yeah. But, it was too much. Help m-me.”
Her eyes widened a bit too much for my liking. “You what, oh dear. That wasn’t supposed to happen. At least not until you knew. Only if your father didn’t take that book.”
She seemed to remember that I was freezing, almost to death. She grabbed my wrist and squeezed them and immediately I felt warmer-as strange as it sounds.
“What just happened?” I asked sitting down on the sofa.
“Um, I rather not say.”
I raised an eyebrow and sighed. “Its fine, I’m just grateful that you help me.”
She began pacing, bit her lip and looked back at me. “I really should tell you. But, it’s not simple to explain.”
I grimaced and looked up at her. “Well, I’ve got time.”
My heart was pounding against my chest and my palms became sweaty. The feeling was similar to anticipation, I wanted to know what was going on, but then again I didn’t want to know. What if it was something awful? Something I couldn’t undo?
She sat beside me on the sofa and sighed, she looked a bit more nervous than I felt. “Well… well – You have a skill,” she said putting it simply.
I raised an eyebrow, that sounded almost like an insult. Of course I had skills, everyone had skills. What was she getting at? I made a gesture with my hand. “And..?”
She ran a hand through her hair and shot me a quick glance. “Well, that skill has to do with what just happened to you. You see, it’s only a theory, though; but we can control rainfall. Sometimes it’s speeding up the water cycle and a next time its working with water. The book that I gave you didn’t give you the reason why, it would just help you to understand and how to use it. I know this sounds weird, but it’s true.”
I stared at her with my mouth open for a long moment. “So, if this is true. I could’ve killed myself?”
She nodded.
I gulped. This made it worse than they already seemed. It was awful, but I could maybe get out of it. “Um, so I can get out of this, right?”
She shook her head and sighed. “I’m afraid not and if you don’t learn how to control this, you can really hurt yourself.”
I stood up and shook my head. “No way! I get an ability and it has to do with rain and water. And what else do you people do manipulate people into thinking that meteorological studies can’t be true, when you’re messing with nature? My parents, too, what did they want me to do? When would they tell me? When I’m finally on my death bed? I hate the stupid rain and now I’m some-some….” I couldn’t even finish, I got too heated. I glared at her and headed toward the kitchen for some water to cool me down.
I almost broke down in the kitchen, this was what this all was about? Some stupid weather thing that I could care less about, affected my life so much. I sighed and headed back into the living room, which didn’t seem so friendly now, to face Madam Lagash.
“Listen Trisha, I didn’t want to spring this on you so sudden. I really wanted to speak to your parents about telling you soon. I’m sorry it had to come to this.”
I shook my head and mustered up a small smile. “No, it’s fine. I’ll just not act on it that’s all.”
“No,” she started, “As I said before you’ll only hurt yourself.”
I grimaced. “This if funny. A bit too funny for my taste. Why couldn’t you people find someone else to pick on? This is so stupid. Can’t it be reversed somehow?” I paused and sat back down. “It doesn’t even matter, does it? What about my parents?”
She knew what I meant. “They-they were too. In fact they still are. But, they’re just like you. They see no reason why we should change the patterns of nature.”
I snorted. “Neither do I. What does this have to do with-“I paused and scowled slightly, “- Jared and Arianna?”
She smiled the first since she arrived. “They are as well. We do have training course after school if you’d like.”
I shook my head and my eyebrows pulled together. “No thanks. I’m under enough pressure as it is already.”
She smiled and started in a long speech about how pressured she was in high school. It wasn’t boring, maybe because she wasn’t old. It was interesting to hear about how life was for a teenager back in those years. I didn’t hear that from my parents; it was a subject that was out-of-bounds.
Pretty soon it was dark out. I was so engulfed in her stories-it sounded almost fictional. She seemed glad that I was interested enough to be asking questions, learning her mistakes and how she changed slowly. It actually taught me something –You have to grow up sometime.
Lights flashed across the living room for a moment and a car engine sounded.
“You’re parents are home,” she said nervously.
I didn’t need to look to check. I was just waiting-waiting on their reaction. Pretty soon two car doors opened and footsteps sounded on the walk up. The atmosphere was frigid, almost like a horror movie. I heard the footsteps approaching and there was nothing I could do. I could only sit tight and face the music, the long dreary music.
