The cold night air did nothing to ease my fears. I wondered how my parents would react when I called them. Probably they wouldn’t mind. Who was I fooling?
Arianna drove through a neighborhood I wasn’t familiar with. In fact, all of the houses looked like mansions. It made my house looks like a dog’s.
She pulled up to a peach colored house that appeared to have three stories, excluding the attic. I was awe-struck.
“Um,” I mumbled, “Should I get out? Or…”
Arianna laughed and got out of the car without replying. I took that as a yes I got of the car and couldn’t stop staring. A small driveway led to garage. A cobble-stone path led up to the front door, which was white and gold.
She pulled her keys from her pocket and opened the door. I bet if this was some cliché movie a choir would’ve started singing already. The walls were a light gold color with crown molding; the floor was a shiny hardwood. In the centre of the room, was a massive staircase; in the ceiling was a crystal chandelier.
I looked around wanting to tell Arianna how lovely her home was, anyone who lived in somewhere like this deserved praise. She was nowhere in sight.
“Aria?” I called looking around, no answer. Then I heard faint footsteps.
“Arianna?” I called again inching closer to the staircase, still no answer.
I wondered if it was some trick, maybe this was all a joke gone horribly wrong. I looked around once more, hearing drawers slam. I couldn’t take it anymore. If I was soon to be in a game of cat and mouse, I’d better get a head start.
I glanced around, yet again, looking for somewhere to hide, to at least wait and see if Arianna would come back. Nowhere was insight. For a big house, it didn’t have many convenient hiding spaces.
The only other option was to go up the stairs, I bit my lip and ran up them, trying to make as little sound as possible.
The first door on the left was open and I ran in. From the little light that I could see, the room appeared to be a male’s. It wasn’t messy, I could just see a male shirt on the bed. Even in here I couldn’t find somewhere to hide, I even tried in the closet, it wouldn’t budge. Who locks their closet?
Steps sounded up the staircase as I ran around the room like an idiot looking for somewhere to hide. Maybe that being hidden in plain sight thing could work. I stood off to the side beside a chest of drawers.
The light flickered on and Arianna’s eyebrow shot up. “What are you doing in my brother’s room?”
I shrugged and struggled to explain. “I thought this was all a trick and you were going to do something bad to me and-“ I stopped abruptly, registering what she said, -“Your brother? You have a brother?”
She chuckled and took a sip of her drink before replying. “Well, yeah, isn’t it obvious?”
I shook my head. I wasn’t some crazy stalker chick, how was I supposed to know her brother? “Well, I haven’t met him so it wasn’t obvious to me.”
She placed the two cups of drink on a desk, so that was what she left for. “My brother’s Jared,” she said slowly as if she was talking to a dense person.
My mouth fell open; now that she mentioned it there was a slight resemblance. I wondered why I never noticed it before.
“But-but, he said you were his girlfriend.”
Her eyebrows shot up once more. “What a liar that boy is.”
I still couldn’t believe it. “You kissed him.”
