This year is a little different for me. I turn eighteen. Some would say "Big whoop," but it is more than that. I gain all of my powers. When I was born, I had the power to levitate, but that was it. When I turned six, I gained telekinesis, but I only use it when I really need to. In two days, I get three more. Nobody knows what they will be for, so I have to wait. My mom is the one I get them from. My dad is the mortal. He is very interested in stuff like this, but my mom doesn't know that. He goes out of town every Thursday to report what we do. He tells mom that his is going shopping, but I know better. He doesn't love her either.
This Thursday, though, is when I get my last three powers, so I doubt he is going. This Thursday is also when my mom loses her powers. Only one person in each family can have powers. That is why I have no siblings, aunts, and uncles on my mom's side. If a witch marries a wizard, then the witch keeps her powers so the unborn child can get the powers better. We only get one child. Yes, I get lonely, but I have great friends. None of them know I am a witch. And we are not like the wizards from Harry Potter. Far from. We don't use wands to do our magic.
"Hey Shana! Happy birthday!" mom yells. "I made pancakes and they are downstairs. Come eat them!"
"Did I gain my powers? When did you get yours?" I question.
"I got mine at noon, just like everybody else did. It is a little different than it was when you were six, so ask your teacher to go to the bathroom at eleven fifty-five so you have enough time to get there. At first, you will get warm. Especially in your hands. For the next part, you need to have a hard concentration on trying to not light your bathroom on fire. Everyone does this. The amount you try determines tour powers. It's weird. That is why I can light things on fire. I had bad concentration because I had ADHD. After that, you have your powers."
"Mom, I-" I couldn't get the rest out because my dad was walking in.
"Yes sweetheart?" she asks me.
"Oh nothing. I'll tell you on the way to school. Let's go eat pancakes!" I'm kind of scared to tell her because I don't think she will believe me.
After I eat and get ready, my dad hugs me goodbye and my mom and I leave for school. Don't get me wrong, I still love my dad, even though he may not love me back. He is only married to my mom for research. That's why I need to tell my mom.
"Mom, I need to talk to you. Dad, well, he doesn't love you. He-"
"He only cares about our powers. I know. I knew when I started dating him. You don't need to worry, I don't do much magic around him."
"Okay." I stay silent until five minutes until we get to school. "What are you going to do? I mean, you will no longer have powers."
"I'll be fine. Good luck at school and call me to tell me your powers. Love you!"
At eleven fifty four, I ask my teacher and tell him it is an emergency. He says no, so I am forced to say I have "girl problems" which isn't true because we don't. Witches don't have periods, but are still fertile.
Everything that my mom told me that will happen, happens. I also didn't light anything on fire. What I didn't know was that Sophia was in the next stall.
"You have powers?" she asks, scaring me.
"Yeah, just got the last three. How do you know?"
"I got them too! When you concentrate on containing the fire, you glow. I find it pretty cool."
"Don't tell anyone please."
"Sure! Let's figure out what powers you got!"
We try her powers first, which are freezing things, night vision, and precognition. I gained precognition, so there is one. When I accidentally touched her broken arm, I healed it, so I also have healing powers.
I called my mom and asked her what she had. She had mind control, the healing power, and fire. I try mind control, but I couldn't do it. I started getting stressed because it was taking a long time. When I get stressed, I sing, but this time, it sounded different. A better different.
"I never sounded like that. Do you think I got singing powers?"
"Sure! That's great! We found your last power! Now let's go eat lunch."
The rest of the day was great, even though my secret was revealed.
